Why Block Websites?
Boulder Valley School District, in accordance with federal Child Internet Protection Act (CIPA) laws, uses a webfilter on internet activity within the district. CIPA says that an Internet safety policy and technology protection measures must be in place. You can learn more about CIPA at their website.
What Product Do We Use?
We currently use a web filtering product called 8e6. This product allows us to filter for content, images and other parameters as defined by the District. This product also allows us to track user data.
The Challenges of Filtering the Internet
As with any automatic filtering program, there is a potential that a website may be blocked when it is an acceptable page. Adversely, there is also a potential, although generally less, that a website that should be blocked is not.
Because of these possibilities, it is the policy of the Division of Information Technology to review on a case-by-case basis, any requests that an employee presents to block or unblock a website. Some content will never be allowed to be unblocked, namely any website containing material considered obscene, pornographic or harmful to minors.
If an Override Option is Available
If you are an employee and find that a website you are attempting to access is blocked, you may see an override option (if you are logged in). Use these instructions to override a blocked page. You must be logged in to view this page. There is a link embedded in this document that will also take you to the current password override page (again, users must be logged in to access).
If an Override Option is NOT Available
If you do not see an option to override, or are reqesting that an inappropriate website be blocked, please send an email request to it.support@bvsd.org. Be sure to include a website address/link and reason for the request. If there are any questions, you will be contacted for clarification.
