It is with immense sadness that we pass on the news of the death of our BVSD colleague, teacher and friend, Mike Romero. Early in the morning of the 4th of July at his home, he lost his battle with cancer. His final days were comfortable and filled with family, friends and love.
"We will always remember his quick wit, unflappable calm, huge reservoirs of strength and feel the power of all that he has taught us," said Robin Sackmann on behalf of the Aspen Creek Counseling Administrative Team. "As a teacher he had a no nonsense style yet there was not a student that crossed his path that didn’t feel incredibly valued as a human being, supported and inspired to learn."
Mike worked at Lafayette, Sanchez, Pioneer, and Angevine prior to going to Aspen Creek for the past three years. He served many years as a loving foster parent, coaching at Centaurus, serving as Mayor of Lafayette, volunteering tirelessly at the local VFW and was an integral part of the creation of a new library in Lafayette. In addition, he was a fabulous chef, proud papa, grandfather and patriot, enjoyed fishing and gambling, loved a good cup of coffee and was master of puns.
You may recall that there was an article in the Daily Camera on Memorial Day regarding Mike and his family. The focus was on a recent park dedication in Lafayette in honor of both Mike and his son and their commitment to serving others.
There is a touching tribute on the front page of the July 5th Camera referencing Mr. Romero’s passing and his many contributions to the community.
He is survived by his wife Geralyn, his daughters Stephanie and Gabrielle, his grandchildren Julian and Carmelita, his mother Rose and numerous siblings. He was preceded in death by both his father and his son Aaron, who served in the Army National Guard in Afghanistan and was the first Coloradoan killed following 9/11.
A rosary for Mr. Romero is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 715 Cabrini Drive in Lafayette. Please note this is the correct address for the church as it has recently moved to a new location. A Mass is also planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, and a reception will be held at the Mile High VFW Post No. 1771, 105 W. Emma St., in Lafayette.
“Grief is about finding a way not to move on past
but to move along with who this person was to you.”
