Technological Literacy and NCLB
The No Child Left Behind Act establishes a goal that all students will be “technologically literate” by the end of 8th grade. Definitions of what is meant by “technology literacy,” have been left by the federal government to the determination of each state. In turn, the state of Colorado has left that judgment to the local school district.
Our NCLB definition of technological literacy is excerpted from our ET-IL Supplement, the Information Literacy and Library Media sub-plan:
The Boulder Valley School district values technology literacy as a careful and balanced mix of information literacy, technical competency with diverse technologies, using technology as a tool for learning, and the ability to apply the design-build process to solve real problems and engage in creative, active learning. We believe that “technology literacy” is best realized through a mixture of curriculum (content) integration and course offerings, rather than specific courses alone. BVSD includes technology literacy among the skills required in the New Century Graduate, which defines the characteristics, skills, and knowledge desired in our high school graduates.
