Curriculum Overview

The K-12 Health Education Curriculum is based on learning seven skills in relation to seven health topics.  Students learn health information that is relevant to their grade level while continually reinforcing the same health-related skills from elementary school through high school in a developmentally appropriate way.  Some health topics are taught in more than one grade level because the type of information about the topic that is taught may be significantly different at various levels (e.g., substance use), or because instruction becomes more sophisticated as students mature.  By learning how to effectively access resources, communicate effectively, analyze peer and media messages, set goals, make decisions and other health-related skills, our youth will be able to maintain and improve their health throughout their lives, regardless of how quickly health information and issues change.  Healthy youth become productive learners and ultimately, fulfilled adults.
