National Board Certification Now Available in Health Education!

Spring, 2008:  The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has announced that the Health Education certificate is the latest addition to the National Board Certification process that describes and certifies what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do.  The goal of the new certificate is to provide accomplished teachers with a way to document that they know and use the best methods to develop in students the critical skills they need to become "health literate."  Like board-certified doctors and accountants, teachers who achieve National Board Certification have met rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and peer review.
National Board Certification is a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize and reward accomplished teachers.  While state licensing systems set basic requirements in each state, NBCT's have successfully demonstrated advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices.  Certification is achieved through a rigorous, performance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years to complete.

For Health teachers to be eligible to obtain National Board Certification, they must:

1. hold a baccalaureate degree

2. have three years teaching experience in early childhood, elementary, middle or high schools prior to submitting an application, and

3. hold a valid state teaching license, where required, for those three years.

Online Graduate Credit Health Education Courses

The American Association for Health Education and the Foundation for the Advancement of Health Education, in conjunction with universities across the U.S., are offering graduate level courses entirely through distance education technologies. These courses have been developed by graduate faculty from various universities and can be taken as stand alone courses or transferred into a graduate program, if applicable. All students who enroll in these online courses will be assigned an instructor/mentor to help them work through the class lectures, materials, and assignments. At the completion of the course, students will receive a letter grade from the instructor/mentor, and a transcript from the host university.

For more information and a list of courses, go to:

Resources for Teaching the Skills-Based Standards

The BVSD K-12 Health Education curriculum is based on the National Health Education Standards (click on "Curriculum Overview" in left menu for more information on the standards).  These standards focus on teaching personal and social skills by having students actively participate in learning and teaching about health rather than having teachers merely provide information that is memorized and easily forgotten.  While Standard #1 is about teaching functional knowledge and core concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention, this knowledge is more effectively learned when it is incorporated with the practice of the skills taught in Standards #2-7.  The following provides some specific information and ideas for Health teachers to consider in teaching the skills-based standards.

Introduction to Teaching Skills-Based Standards

Standard #1:  Comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention.

Standard #2:  Access valid health information and health-promoting products and services.

Standard #3:  Practice health-enhancing behaviors and reduce helath risks.

Standard #4:  Analyze the influences of culture, family, peers, media, technology, and other factors on health.

Standard #5: Use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health.

Standard #6: Use decision-making and goal-setting skills to enhance health.

Standard #7: Advocate for personal, family and community health.

Asthma

New Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) asthma video and toolkit:  To support schools and communities in creating asthma-friendly schools, DASH has released Initiating Change: Creating an Asthma-Friendly School, a toolkit developed to help advocates at the district and school levels persuade people in their schools and communities of the importance of asthma-friendly schools. The cornerstone of the toolkit is a 13-minute, inspirational video on Creating an Asthma-Friendly School, which features real-life success stories of students in Charlotte, North Carolina and Detroit, Michigan who, thanks to their schools' asthma-friendly policies and programs, now have their asthma under control. The toolkit also includes materials to help people plan and facilitate a showing of the video in their community or school, as well as science-based suggestions and tools for making their schools more asthma-friendly.

The toolkit and a link to a podcast of the video are now available on the CDC/DASH website at www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/asthma/creatingafs. A link to an on-demand webinar on Marketing Asthma-Friendly Schools is also available at this site. The webinar provides information on how asthma advocates can use the video and toolkit to encourage people to make their schools more asthma-friendly.

You can order the video (in DVD format), a CD-ROM of all toolkit materials, or a hard copy of the toolkit (which includes the DVD and CD-ROM) by e-mailing cdcinfo@cdc.gov or calling 800-CDC-INFO (800-232-4636).
