Program Characteristics

Mesa is a high-achieving elementary school nestled up against the mountains in south Boulder. Mesa is a “Triple A+” school which balances academics, the arts and athletics. We offer our students a wide scope of learning opportunities. Our school has been awarded the John J. Irwin Award for Excellence as an outstanding school of distinction.

Academics are a high priority. Teachers use formative assessment practices to monitor student progress, provide descriptive feedback, and actively engage students as learners. Differentiation of instruction is woven into the structure of the day in all subject areas to meet the individual needs of the learners. Talented and Gifted (TAG) programs, learning center assistance, literacy, math and technology support are designed to help students discover their strengths and talents.

Special Programs and Opportunities

Mesa offers students a wide variety of special programs and activities related to academics, the arts, athletics, cultural and community activities. We encourage parents and children to take advantage of these opportunities that are available in our school. A sampling of those opportunities follows:

Academics

  • Science Fair — Science Fair is available to all grades in early spring.
  • Chess Club—Chess club meets once per week for a 6-week session, for all grades.
  • Math Olympiads — Selected fourth and fifth grade students meet weekly to develop math strategies which are used while competing on five annual national tests.
  • Gifted and Talented Enrichment programming.
  • Student Council

Arts

  • Art Show — The school-wide K-5 Art Show is scheduled every spring. Additionally, Mesa students are featured in District shows.
  • Arts Day — The Mesa community celebrates the arts for a full day in the spring. Students have opportunities to interact with visual and musical artists and participated in a variety of dance activities.

Athletics

  • Fitness Club — Mesa’s Fitness Club includes K-5 students and parents and meets each spring to prepare to run in the Bolder Boulder. This year, over 150 parents and children participated in Fitness Club.
  • Jump Rope for Heart — This school-wide opportunity in February is a fun way for children to raise money for the American Heart Association.

Garden to Table and Eco-Cycle

  • Mesa Elementary is a Green Star School, where students participate in the Garden to Table program that promotes sustainable living, with an emphasis on nutrition, wellness, and renewable energy.
