Founded in 1875 as part of the University of Colorado, Boulder High is Colorado’s oldest accredited high school. BHS maintains strong traditions in academics, athletics, fine arts and activities.
Its diverse population and community setting enrich Boulder High School. Students access CU’s academic programs and community events regularly.
Boulder High provides honors courses in all academic areas and has one of the most comprehensive Advanced Placement (AP) programs in the state. The school offers 28 different AP courses to all grade levels. For the 2005-06 school year, Boulder High instituted AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a program designed to provide an increased number of students with access to rigorous courses, such as AP. Additionally, BVSD’s largest English as a Second Language program is an integral part of Boulder High, serving students from 30 countries speaking 27 different languages.
Athletic programs regularly compete for and win championships. Visual and performing arts have an excellent reputation and score highly in state competitions. The pottery, photography and video production studios (including “Panther TV”) and the “Millennium Lab” are state-of-the-art. BHS offers five foreign languages: Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Latin.
Student support programs such as the Opportunity Zone (“O-Zone”), Connections, Tutor/Activity Period (TAP), ESL Study Skills, Student Support Process, and Adelante! help students with extra support in academics and/or catch-up on course credit. Additionally, incoming ninth graders participate in Freshman Seminar during TAP, which has proven successful along with the Links Crew program in aiding the transition to high school.
