Are all resources available all the time? Nope...

A BVSD teacher librarian thoughtfully wrote:

Len-

I just tried viewing it, and got the message that all licenses are in use right now and I could reserve it for later.  Is there a set amount of licenses for each video?  10? 15?  Just curious-

Len’s Answer:

The original email indicates only one viewing at a time on this previous DIMC resource, in this case only. Some videos will allow three simultaneous viewings. Others will allow five. Others are unlimited. This is defined by the licensing we acquire, and is hard coded into the MediaCast system.

About the error message: Other librarians are viewing it, is what is happening. Now you have learned that some items need to be scheduled, others can be viewed on demand!

Phase 1 Underway!
Phase 1 of the rollout for schools in the Digital Content Initiative has been initiated. Genna is contacting each school's teacher-librarian and principal (there are five phase 1 schools) to schedule training and a launch a cadre of users.

Some parts of MediaCast are NOT working quite right, but enough pieces are working to justify the launch, if folks are apprised of the faulty issues. Stay tuned for more good news!

Let's Talk About the Content!
Over the 08-09 school year, a committee of elementary, middle, and high school educators from all content areas evaluated thousands of videos to select useful content for our district.
We selected content from two providers- Learn 360 and CCC!. All of the video content will be available through a one stop shop, called MediaCAST. We will continue to pilot our new system in the fall with a handful of schools to ensure reliability to our teachers.
We are excited about this!

And Cable TV.....!

and CABLE TV!

Edit
The Digital Content Initiative also has a Cable TV component.  Cable TV has long been used by schools to cover current events (inaugurations, disasters, world events, etc) and for the taping of program with high current interest. Cable TV, however, has been limited to a few locations (e.g.,  the school library) in most schools.

With the arrival of the Digital Content Initiative, grade-appropriate Cable TV will be delivered to each classroom or teacher desktop in BVSD, without the limits of location or bandwidth.

Here is what your screen will look like in accessing CABLE TV from your desktop...

Digital Content: What will this mean to me in the classroom?
Currently when teachers want to show videos to their students, they have to find a DVD, DVD player and TV. The students then watch the entire video, or the teacher has to manually fast forward to find the appropriate part of the video for the lesson. We are moving towards having all video content available through the network to school and home computers. With simple searching in our database, desired videos can be located from thousands of quality video appropriate to your lesson. In addition, the videos are also saved  in sections so that the teacher can easily play the section needed for the lesson. The videos can also be saved and inserted into presentations.

Here is what your screen will look like on your desktop,,,

Here is what a search will look like, using 'psychology' as the search word...

And here is what you see when you select a video on your desktop (and yes, you can expand it to full size)...

When can you get it? We are currently evaluating the content for our district. We are following a thorough testing process to ensure reliability throughout the district. We anticipate the digital content will be available district-wide by December 2009 (possibly sooner), and in 5-10 pilot schools before then.
