BVSD School Board names former long-time Jeffco Superintendent, Dr. Cynthia Stevenson, sole finalist for Interim BVSD Superintendent

If approved in 14 days, Dr. Stevenson will guide this high achieving district during the school board's search for a permanent superintendent.

(BOULDER) At a special public meeting of the Boulder Valley School District Board of Education, the board named Dr. Cynthia Stevenson as the sole finalist to serve as BVSD interim superintendent while the district's school board conducts its national search for a new permanent superintendent during the upcoming school year. This action allows the school board to begin a 14-day waiting period before they can consider final action on Dr. Stevenson's appointment.

Dr. Stevenson, who from 2002 until 2014 served as Superintendent of Jefferson County Public Schools, began her public education career in 1972 as an elementary classroom teacher. In the 1983-84 school year, Dr. Stevenson served as a resource specialist in language arts. The following year (1984-85), she joined the school administrative ranks as an elementary school assistant principal. Dr. Stevenson joined the Jeffco principals' ranks in 1985 - first at the elementary level and then, in 1991, at the middle school level. In 1995, she served as a principal on special assignment for performance-based compensation followed by an assignment as an area administrator until 1997. Dr. Stevenson's rapid rise through the administrative ranks of Colorado's second largest (of 178) school district continued as she was promoted in 1999 to deputy superintendent before becoming superintendent in 2002.

"BVSD is delighted to take the critical next step in establishing the collaborative, community process necessary for hiring a permanent superintendent," stated BVSD school board President Sam Fuqua. "With an interim superintendent of Cindy Stevenson's caliber and expertise in place, the school board can now put a strong focus on the selection of a top quality firm to manage and coordinate the permanent superintendent search process which will draw from every segment of the BVSD community," President Fuqua concluded.

At Friday's (6/2) special meeting, board President Fuqua reminded colleagues that, at its regular meeting on May 23, they had heard a presentation from Ken DeLay, executive director of the Colorado Association of School Boards. DeLay spoke in general about how a long-term superintendent search process is conducted. More importantly, according to Fuqua, for the board's consideration at today's special board meeting, DeLay outlined reasons why the school board should consider the appointment of an interim superintendent for a term of six months to a year. Among other factors, the general season for soliciting the interest of qualified long-term superintendent candidates has passed for the upcoming school year and the customary timeline to begin a search process with full stakeholder involvement will not begin until late fall. Fuqua added that, in light of the various considerations, the school board had received the names of possible candidates for an interim superintendent and had an opportunity to consider their qualifications.

The sole agenda item scheduled for today (6/2) was to allow the Board to approve and publicly declare one or more finalists for the position of interim superintendent and to begin a 14-day period before which the Board would officially consider employing anyone. The school board felt that, based upon her qualifications, Dr. Stevenson should be named the sole finalist.
