BVSD and BVEA Reach Tentative Agreement on Two-Year Contract

BOULDER – The Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) and the Boulder Valley Education Association (BVEA) reached a tentative two-year (2010-2011 & 2011-2012) agreement Wednesday afternoon, June 16 during their second mediated negotiating session. Because BVEA members are currently on summer break, a ratification vote by members will take place when BVSD teachers return for the start of the 2010-2011 school year. If the two-year agreement is ratified by members, it will then be taken up for a final vote by the seven-member Boulder Valley Board of Education. BVEA will set the dates for its membership to vote on the tentative agreement.

Because the tentative agreement will not be ratified by the June 30 legal deadline for BVSD to have a balanced 2010-2011 budget adopted, the school board will vote on the proposed budget currently before them at their June 22 regular meeting. That proposed budget does not reflect the terms of the new tentative agreement. However, a revision incorporating the terms of the tentative agreement to the 2010-2011 BVSD budget will be brought to the school board if the tentative agreement is ratified by BVEA members and the school board.

The elements of the BVSD/BVEA Tentative Agreement for compensation are as follows:

  • Two year Agreement through 2011-2012
  • Teacher work year reduced by one non-student contact day from 187-186 days (Veterans Day)
  • Salary schedule educational attainment movement for both years
  • Full employee premium cost provided for health and dental insurance coverage for both years
  • Salary schedule experience steps provided for all teachers for 2010-2011
  • Salary schedule experience steps frozen for 2011-2012
  • If the Board of Education approves a mill levy override question for November 2010 and the voters approve it, salary schedule experience steps and a 1% cost of living increase will be applied for 2011-2012

BVSD Superintendent Chris King and Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Becky McClure acknowledged both the district and teacher association negotiating teams for their hard work and good faith negotiations in very challenging economic times.
