International Walk-to-School Day is October 7

Students celebrate walking and cycling to school

Elementary students across Boulder and Broomfield counties will celebrate International Walk-to-School Day on the morning of Wednesday, October 7, 2009. At least 5,000 BVSD walkers and cyclists at 31 schools are expected to take part in this festive annual event, joining more than three million participants worldwide.

What began in 1994 as a small experiment by parent activists in a London, UK, suburb has mushroomed into a worldwide happening that takes place in 40 countries including China, Mexico, Israel and South Africa.

“Empower Children to Power Themselves!” is the theme of this year’s Walk-to-School Day. The event brings together school communities to raise awareness about walking and cycling as transportation while increasing the physical activity and reducing auto traffic.

“We can send the message to our children that they’re capable and independent young people, while also conveying that we value walking and biking for our health and environment,” said Fawnda Hathaway, event coordinator. “Walking and biking on Walk-to-School Day is a great way to celebrate your school community and honor the environment. It’s healthful and fun at the same time…the kids love it!”

Landon Hilliard, BVSD Student Transportation Coordinator, added, “My hope is that Walk-to-School Day will act as an ‘eye-opener’ for students and parents so they can see for themselves the benefits of walking and cycling, and say, ‘Hey, I can do this!’”

Walk Features:

Banner Sign-In: Students sign a large Walk Banner as a memento of the event
Clif Z-BaR and Twisted Fruit: All participating students will be given these healthful snacks
Ride & Stride: Students are bussed to drop-off place and then join a Walk Parade to school
Eco-Cycle Used Athletic Shoes Recycling: Collection of old athletic shoes (Oct 5-9)
