Semifinalist and Commended Students in the 2010 National Merit® Scholarship Program
LOUISVILLE: The principal, Dr. Jerry Anderson, of Monarch High School, announced today that Michael S. Nye is a Semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 55th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $36 million, that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.
Monarch High also has ten Commended Students in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program: Maura Allen, Albert Downs-Kingston, Grace Fu, Matthew Menezes, Jane Miller, Matthew Newell, Jeffrey Stephens, Lisa Walker, Julian Ward and Daniel Webb. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2010 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).
