BOULDER: Three more BVSD students were named by CenturyLink, ROOT SPORTS and the University of Colorado as Winning Attitude award recipients this week:
- The ninth Winning Attitude awardee in 2011-12 is Manhattan Middle School eighth grader Pasquelle Aggett-Carosell.
- The tenth (and final) awardees in 2011-12 are Platt CHOICE Middle School eighth graders Noa Greenwald and Lily Siegert.
Winners are selected from a pool of written essays submitted by Colorado middle school students explaining how their winning attitude has made a difference in their communities.
Aggett-Carosella, Greenwald and Siegert join three other BVSD students who won earlier this year: Ashley Doolittle of Louisville Middle was the first winner of the year, Everett “Scooter” Jones of Casey was the fifth, and Matthew Moniz of Platt CHOICE was the sixth Winning Attitude winner in 2011-12.
Manhattan Middle School’s Aggett-Carosella demonstrated her winning attitude by starting a free soccer camp for young children in her neighborhood. Aggett-Carosella is an avid soccer player with U14 Boulder Athletics, shared her skills and passion for the sport by organizing and executing a summer-long camp. Aggett-Carosella states, “My definition of a winning attitude is learning to play my best on the field and then sharing my talents off the field. I realized how easy and rewarding it is to share my soccer skills and help everyone who wants to play to succeed.”
Manhattan Middle School Principal Fernandez adds, “Pasquelle embodies the Manhattan Middle School values of RISE (Respect, Individual Responsibility, Safety and Excellence) in her approach to her studies and her interactions with others. Her presence enriches the Manhattan Middle School community and we are proud to have her represent our school through her Winning Attitude essay.”
Aggett-Carosella and her classmates will be honored at halftime of the Colorado vs. Arizona State men’s basketball game Thursday, January 19, with a 6:30 p.m. tip-off time.
Platt CHOICE Program’s Greenwald and Siegert demonstrated their winning attitude by making a difference in the Boulder homeless community. They have been serving breakfast at the Boulder Homeless Shelter since they were both 10 years old. They wanted to contribute on a larger scale, which led them to create and execute a fundraiser for the Boulder Homeless Shelter. The fundraiser also had an informational component to it as the shelter’s supervisor and former homeless resident spoke in conjunction with a documentary about homelessness. Greenwald and Siegert’s event went on to raise $1,800 surpassing their initial goal of $1,000.
Platt CHOICE Middle School Principal, Dr. Kevin Gates, adds, “In CHOICE we focus on building community and caring about each other. It warms my heart to see our students extending these values into the greater Boulder community.”
Greenwald and Siegert and their classmates will be honored at halftime of the Colorado vs. Arizona men’s basketball game Saturday, January 21, with a 4 p.m. tip-off time.
The Winning Attitude essay contest is back for the sixth consecutive year. The program has been developed and sponsored by CenturyLink and ROOT SPORTS in partnership with the University of Colorado to recognize Colorado middle school students that make a difference in their communities by providing outstanding efforts in sportsmanship, community involvement and teamwork.
