An exciting new service has recently been launched in Boulder Valley School District – Student Enrollment Online (SEO) at enroll.bvsd.org. SEO made its debut on Jan. 5, 2009, after a solid year of research and development. This new system enables parents to enroll their students in BVSD schools through an online process.

“Student Enrollment Online is meant to improve the accuracy of our data, which will provide the district with a more complete funding picture,” said Mike Wilcox, BVSD Assistant Director for Student Enrollment. “Most importantly, this method of enrollment should be easier for many of our parents.”

From now on, all students who are new or returning to BVSD from out-of-district can be enrolled online through SEO by their parents or guardians. Before SEO, the enrollment process was entirely paper-based – parents filled out all the necessary paperwork and delivered it to the schools, where registrars entered the information into the district’s Infinite Campus database. Although parents will still need to deliver some paperwork to their schools, the majority of the enrollment process can now be done online from any computer with internet access.

For families who do not have access to an internet connection, computers have been set up at about a third of BVSD schools, so far, with plans to eventually expand these SEO kiosks into all schools throughout BVSD. The SEO enrollment screens display in English or Spanish, depending upon which language the user selects.
Over 1600 enrollments have been received through SEO so far since it launched, according to BVSD District Registrar Kim Moore.

“We’ve had a great response from parents who really wanted this and we are getting a lot of good data, which was one of our goals,” said Kim. “When parents are doing this from the comfort of their own homes, they seem to be taking more time to provide complete answers to the questions.”

Kim mentioned that she has heard especially favorable comments from parents who live out of town and are moving to this area in the fall. They like SEO because it enables them to get a head start on enrolling their children in school before they actually make the move.

Please note that students may be enrolled through SEO only to their neighborhood schools or to the schools for which their BVSD open enrollment applications have already been accepted and confirmed. Parents who have completed the open enrollment process receive a “letter of acceptance/confirmation” for their child’s new school assignment, which they must return to the Open Enrollment office before using SEO to enroll their child in that new school. The SEO system will not ultimately allow parents to enroll their student into a school other than his or her “neighborhood school” based on the address of residence, or the new “school of attendance” based on an open enrollment acceptance. It may look to the parent as though the enrollment is working online if they try to do this, but that enrollment will be voided when it reaches the district level of processing.
