A message from Superintendent Chris King - BVSD Budget Update At the board’s last regular meeting on March 10, I reported on our four superintendent’s community budget forums and other meetings designed to determine our budget priorities for the coming 2009-2010 fiscal year. I used these forums to listen and interact with our parents and employees during these uncertain times.
As I stated in March, our parents’ first priority is maintaining, as much as possible, current class sizes. Their second priority is related to their first. They value and respect their teachers and want them to keep their jobs. Thirdly, they want us to find efficiencies in our current operation.
To this end, I have been meeting with cabinet to review each of their budgets on a program-by-program basis looking for efficiencies. I will be able to be more specific as to where I’ve found efficiencies at next week’s April 21 Board Work Session.
This year’s amendments to the School Finance Act were initially drafted in late March. However, those figures have moved back and forth over the past five weeks as the governor’s office, the legislature and its Joint Budget Committee struggle to reach a decision as to how to meet the constitutionally mandated K-12 funding increase under Amendment 23 and determine how the state fiscal stabilization funds from the federal stimulus package can backfill state government cuts.
The March 20 state revenue projection came in over $150 million less than projected by the state in December. Because state lawmakers are concerned that they have enough reserves on hand at the end of this fiscal year to balance the 2008-2009 fiscal year, they are hesitant to draw down their current reserves. |

Impact on Education's Razzle Dazzle Beach Ball A Night in Nantucket - May 30th Impact on Education funds everything we do for students and teachers in BVSD through donations from businesses, foundations and individuals. In these challenging economic times, fundraising events are more critical than ever. Our annual major fund raiser Razzle Dazzle Beach Ball, is the single largest source of funding, contributing $100,000 to $200,000 each year! In its 22nd year, this event attracts 450-550 guests to “the big tent” on the shores of the Boulder Reservoir the Saturday following the end of school. This year’s “Night in Nantucket,” will be Saturday, May 30 from 5:30 to 10:00 p.m. and offers a New England theme, extending to the food, cocktails, décor and music.
The evening starts with canapés, cocktails and jazz, while guests peruse silent auction items featuring gift baskets, donated by BVSD schools and gift certificates and items from area businesses. Dinner will feature a buffet of East Coast inspired cuisine such as lime flank steak with cranberry onion relish and fish escolar with blueberry cilantro salsa, followed by a live auction featuring vacation getaways, sports packages, fabulous dining experiences and unique adventures.
The Razzle Dazzle fund raiser allows Impact on Education to fund annual programs such as Classroom Mini-Grants, the Opportunity Fund and Crayons to Calculators; as well as current multi-year programs such as tutoring support at Boulder (Adelante) and Centaurus High Schools, an Algebra I pilot at Monarch and Centaurus High Schools, the GAMES (Girls at the Museum Exploring Science) partnership with CU for grade school girls and the Take My Teacher Home partnership with BVSD Instructional Technology Department, which helps kindergartners achieve literacy proficiency.
Attending Razzle Dazzle Beach Ball is a wonderful way to enjoy the area’s best FUNraiser while supporting educational excellence in BVSD. Tickets are $150 per person and can be purchased online on our homepage at www.ImpactOnEducation.org or by calling 303-245-5937. The deadline for buying tickets is Friday, May 22. Thanks to corporate sponsors that help to underwrite the event, $75 of the ticket price is a tax deductible contribution.
Impact on Education is dedicated to increasing student learning and support for public education in the Boulder Valley School District. We focus on supporting and motivating excellent teachers; increasing student interest and achievement in science, technology and math; and creating opportunities for “at-risk” students. Spring Cleaning Spring is here – now is the time for cleaning your work area to ensure a safe working environment. To avoid tripping, please read the do’s and don’t’s listed below:
Eliminate Trip Hazards Many fall injuries occur on level ground when people trip over unexpected objects in their path. Help eliminate trip hazards by training employees to follow these do's and don'ts.
Do:
- Keep work areas neat and tidy, putting tools, materials and other items away after use.
- Pick up items off the floor, even if you didn't put them there.
- Step over or around obstructions, not on them.
- Walk slowly and change directions slowly, especially when carrying a load.
- Watch for changes in floor level—such as a few steps or a ramp up or down.
- Report lighting problems, such as burned-out bulbs, to maintenance right away.
- Use a flashlight if you need more light leaving the facility in the dark.
Don't:
- Leave boxes, bags, tools or other materials on the floor.
- Block walkways with hand trucks, equipment or materials.
- Leave cords or cables in walkways.
- Place anything on stairs.
- Leave drawers open.
Keep your area uncluttered and yourself safe from tripping! |
