Walk & Roll Each Thursday, Sept, Oct, April and May!At Flatirons Elementary, we have Walk & Roll Thursdays in September, October, April and May. Each Thursday during the program, homeroom teachers take a survey of their students to see how they got to school. Classroom contest winners in three categories - K/1st, 2nd/3rd, 4th/5th - receive a free lunch for the whole class. Plus, there is a special surprise for the most improved class from Fall to Spring!
Here's how kids earn points for their classrooms:
- Walk to school
- Get out of the car a block away and walk
- Ride a Bike, Scooter or Skateboard
- Ride the School Bus
- Ride RTD bus
- Get dropped off the school bus a half-mile away from school to join a "Walking School Bus," chaperoned by parent volunteers.
The goal is to reduce traffic, and promote lifestyle habits to increase the health of our kids and our environment.
Other special events include:
Fall Bike Swap: Kids bring in bikes they have outgrown and trade them for bigger bikes. We have teamed up with a local non-profit Community Cycles, who provides bigger bikes for the older kids to swap into.
Spring Fitness Fiesta: A Friday afternoon event that includes a bike swap with help from Community Cycles, a bicycle obstacle course, bike repair, bike and scooter decorating, helmet fitting, fun fitness stations, a jump roping contest, and scooter / skateboard obstacle course.
