 TAG (Talented and Gifted) Program

In response to a survey of neighborhood families, Columbine began enhancing our TAG (Talented and Gifted) program in 2005.  The goal of this effort was not only to serve the top 10% of our student population, but to offer accelerated learning opportunities to ALL students who would benefit from a greater challenge. Columbine, with support from the district, has dedicated extra resources to our TAG program.  These resources give us a unique opportunity to have two certified teachers, one who has a gifted and talented endorsement - an honor only shared by two other teachers in the district.  These teachers work together part-time to administrate our TAG program.   Columbine's program focuses on the whole child.  We understand that growth for the gifted child should not end in the classroom.  We provide enrichment opportunities, mentoring and offer discussion groups with our school counselors for both family members and students.  These groups discuss affective issues gifted children sometimes struggle with, helping to prepare them for their bright future.

Please use this page to familiarize yourself with our offerings and approach to gifted education.  You'll also find some helpful links to other resources for parents of gifted children.   If you have any questions or would like to contact our TAG instructors directly, they can be emailed at michelle.dubois@bvsd.org or steve.ollanik@bvsd.org .

  BVSD Talented and Gifted Beliefs:

We Believe:

  • All children deserve to have their educational needs met.
  • Gifted and talented children have significant specific academic, social, and emotional needs that evolve, change, and require flexible services from staff trained in meeting those needs.
  • Gifted and talented individuals are present in all populations, and may be at risk if their educational, social, and emotional needs are unidentified and/or unmet.
  • That meeting the needs of gifted and talented students requires collaboration and communication among parents, teachers, staff, students, and the community.
  • In providing parents and the community with educational opportunities to become aware of, understand, and participate in meeting the unique needs of gifted and talented individuals.

Giftedness comes in all colors and languages, both genders, and in all economic and social groups. Children of color, representing different ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds, and English Language Learners are traditionally under-identified in gifted and talented programs for various reasons.  At Columbine we are fortunate to have a diversified gifted population.  Below is a list of some of the types of giftedness found in diverse populations.  A complete listing of the characteristics of students who fall into each of these categories can be found in our TAG slide show listed in the links to the right.
