BVSD - Congratulations Destination ImagiNation!

May 29, 2008

Students from Lafayette Elementary have been doing something right! They have learned how to work as a team, write a script, build props and put on a skit that wowed the judges at the State Destination ImagiNation Competition in Denver in April. All the long hours of hard work paid off for them as they headed to the Destination ImagiNation Global Finals May 20-24 in Knoxville, TN. The seven-member team, HAIRlarious, tied for 20th place out of 80 teams in their division. It was a wonderful learning experience for the entire team.

March 19, 2008

Despite winning the 2008 National Distinguished Principals honor for Colorado, Lafayette Elementary principal Holly Hultgren isn’t taking sole credit for the distinction.

“It’s been really fun to share the honor, I’m trying not to have the spotlight on me, but the school, the kids and the community,” Hultgren said this week. “It’s a wonderful spotlight on Lafayette Elementary.”

On March 13, Hultgren received notice she had secured the award, which is only given out by National Association of Elementary School Principals to one principal in each state, and the District of Columbia.

CHN Online - "The Lafayette Link"

January 16, 2008

Communication is the key to any good, lasting relationship. And, in the city of Lafayette, this theory applies not only to one-on-one relationships, but also relationships between schools.

Centaurus High School and Angevine Middle School have been working over the past few years to create a cooperative effort for students interested in Centaurus’ pre-engineering program.

The program, which seeks to help students get on the right path toward a career in engineering, is still in its early stages. So, it is actually quite fitting that the administrators behind the cooperative effort are themselves new to the area.

December 5, 2007

Lafayette Elementary just got another boost in its efforts to improve its image.

The school now is rated "high" by the state, up from "average" a year ago. The rating improvement follows the school adding a talented-and-gifted focus and seeing steady enrollment increases.

"We're trying to pass the word to all the neighbors that it's such an awesome school," said Amy Serbousek, who has three children at Lafayette Elementary and is the PTA president. "Now we have the backing of the rating. We can say, 'Look at this great school. It's getting better all the time.'"

Daily Camera - BVSD elementaries get counselors

October 21, 2007

At recess, Boulder Valley counselor Justin Pacheck is on the playground looking for students by themselves or fighting instead of playing.

He recently pushed a girl in a wheelchair so she could join in a game with her Lafayette Elementary fifth-grade classmates instead of watching from the side. He also talks one-on-one with students struggling to fit in, those bullying classmates and "anything else that comes up."

Daily Camera - School to start in mid-Aug.

January 24, 2007

Those planning late-summer vacations are on notice: School will start in the middle of August.

The Boulder Valley school board Tuesday voted 5-2, with Jean Paxton and Patti Smith dissenting, to start a week earlier so the fall semester ends before the holiday break.

Many parents opposed to the change said they want the start of school pushed until after Labor Day. Others said the decision will cut into family vacation time or that it's too hot in the buildings in August.

January 18, 2007

Sylvia de la Cruz had just gone to bed around midnight a week ago when one of her children, watching snow out the
window, saw flames.

Through a translator, she said her husband, Roberto Jimenez, tried to douse the fire with water from the kitchen sink. Realizing it was spreading too fast, they used a window to get their five children out. De la Cruz remembers frantically trying to wake one son while cradling her 4-month-old.

If you can walk, you can dance. If you can talk, you can sing.
