PTA :: Volunteer Positions
Volunteers are a vital part of the Lafayette Elementary School community. Each year many parents and community members share their time and talents with our students. The success of our school depends on parent involvement. Children receive a strong, positive message that school is important each time they see you volunteer. Volunteering is a great way to meet other parents and most importantly, it will make your child proud!
- We have many areas in which you can contribute outside of the classroom. There is something to fit everyone's interest and schedule: during school hours, right after school, evenings, at home, ongoing, short-term or one-time. Lafayette Elementary needs you. Thank you in advance!
Please contact Suzanne Hoagland at smhoagland@mac.com if you have any questions.

ALL CULTURES DINNER & FESTIVAL COORDINATOR(S) – Oct to Dec 9, 2009 This is a wonderfully entertaining event where families come to Lafayette Elementary for a night of casual dinner and multi-cultural performances from students and families at our school. You would work with a team of people to plan and organize all aspects of the event, including planning, securing, setting up, serving and breaking down dinner in the cafeteria and securing and organizing performers on performance and rehearsal nights.
This effort requires a lot of volunteers, and the PTA will help advertise for specific needs. For more information, please contact Tracy Myers, Program Chair, at (720) 890-7104 or e-mail at Myers_family1@yahoo.com. Time commitment: 15-30 hours btwn Oct - Dec (depending on # of volunteers).

CHESS CLUB HELPERS - now through Jan, 2010 Beginning Chess Club: Fridays, 2:30-3:30 Support our awesome Chess Club leader in guiding our Lafayette Elementary kids in playing Chess. Any parent who can listen to the strategy & rules talk, hand out snacks, and help manage the room would be helpful.
Competitive Chess Club: Thursdays, 2:30-3:30 A parent with basic chess knowledge would provide greater benefit to our players, but listening to the talk (at the beginning of each meeting) and playing some of the kids (when there is an odd number of kids) would also provide considerable support. Later, when we get into league play, we will need help with field trip forms & arranging transportation.
If you would like to help with either of our Chess Clubs, please contact Lawrence Beshear at LDBeshear@ForteD.com or call 303-604-0019.

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL PROGRAM - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Lafayette Elementary School applied for and received a $12,000.00 Federal Grant, called Safe Routes to School, to help more of our families walk or bike to school safely. The anticipated benefits include more exercise for our children and an appreciation of the reduced pollution and gas money saved by using human powered transportation.
The Grant provides a bike safety training class for our 5th grade students in PE class, the establishment of safe routes to our school by mapping out the best streets to use to get to our school, communication with the city planning and police department to seek improvements to existing side-walks and intersections that currently may not be safe, establishing relationships with local bicycle shops to provide our school's families access to safe, functional bike-parts and educational bike repair skills, the development of neighborhood parent-lead walking/biking groups, and school-wide events with prizes that provide incentives for our students to walk and bike to school more regularly.
We are inviting parents to serve on a committee that meets once a month, probably on a Friday morning at a local coffee shop, to plan walking and biking events for the months ahead. The committee will plan events and recruit volunteers who can contribute by performing a simple, specific task that helps the program, such as bringing muffins (paid by the Grant) to school on the mornings of special walk/bike days, leading a neighborhood walking/biking group, distributing prizes (paid by the Grant) to frequent walkers and bikers, assisting during the bike safety assemblies, serving as an accountant, helping during a bike rodeo, and other tasks that promote the program.
If you are interested in either serving on the committee, or just to help with one task, please contact Bruce Buchanan at bruce.buchanan@bvsd.org. Thank you for your consideration in helping more of our students walk and bike safely to school.
