Advanced Journalism Course

BVSD course #LE5

This is a full year course, for grade levels 10-12, in which students can earn ten language arts elective credits, five per semester.  Journalism staff members learn how to develop an action plan, conduct interviews, write copy and captions, take photographs, and design pages.  Students learn to use the schools’ computers and the latest in desktop publishing using Adobe InDesign software.  They learn computer file management, pdfing, downloading and managing and cropping action digital photos.   Students also sell advertising, learn to work within a budget, participate in fundraising, and promote a positive image of themselves, the school, and the community.  In addition, students problem-solve, develop back-up plans, set and achieve goals, organize time and tasks, communicate effectively with peers and adults, and meet publication deadlines throughout the year.  Students are often required to work several hours each week outside of class on some phases of the publication’s production.   They reap the rewards of distributing a quality product which features their work.  Students may continue in this course for elective credit.

If you would like to be on the newspaper for next year, you’ll need to complete an application and submit two teacher recommendations.  Application and recommendation forms are available on line to download or hard copies can be picked up outside room L205A (across from the library).  Both the application form and the recommendation forms are due to Elaine Grace, adviser, by the first Friday in March.  Applicants will be individually notified by April of their acceptance in the course.

Contact Ms. Grace, elaine.grace@bvsd.org, with any questions or concerns.
