Small group literacy instruction provided one to two hours per day by classroom and literacy teachers using Guided Reading Plus (K-3), CLIP (1), SOAR(3-5), and literacy circles instruction strategies (4-5). Assessment of reading and writing skills occurs three times per year. Progress is tracked using First Steps development continuums for reading and writing. Instructional materials include guided reading leveled books, junior great books, intermediate fiction books, and non-fiction materials to support content area learning.
Investigations math instruction for grades K-5 with supplemental instruction as needed. Individual Math Recovery Instruction for selected first grade students.
Science exploration through district curriculum and FOSS science units, partnership with Cal-Wood Outdoor Education Center (experiential natural science learning) and the University of Colorado’s School of Engineering (experiential physical science learning).
BVSD history and geography curriculum. Civics and economics learning through district curriculum including Small Sense, Mini-Society and Ameritowne experiential learning.
Instructional Technology opportunities in classrooms (two to four computers per room), in a newly revamped computer lab, and through a beginning literacy partnership with CU’s Cognitive Studies and Language Reasearch (grades K-2).
Head Start preschool program for age 4 children and district preschool. |
