Extra Curricular Activities

Science Fair – The Science Fair is open to all students.  Two hundred forty students participated in April.  Twenty community members served as judges and seventy-six Einstein awards were given for thorough data collection, interesting question, exceptional display and thoughtful conclusion.
     
Spotlights – This vocal choir is open to 4th and 5th graders who have an interest in developing skills in vocal skills and choral music and a commitment to attend rehearsals and performances.  The choir rehearses mornings before school and performs two programs during the year at school and in the community.  Eighty-eight students participated throughout this year.

Handbells – This is a music group for 5th graders, in which 18 participated.

Fifth Grade Ensembles – girls, boys, mixed – Musical groups for 5th grade boys and girls.  This year 26 students participated.

Jump Rope Club – All students are invited to come in before school once a week to increase cardiovascular endurance, improve coordination and agility, meet friends, have fun, and learn to be great rope skippers.  There are over 60 students and usually around 15 parents participating.

Intramural Program – 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students are invited to come in before school once a week to further develop motor skills, enjoy a more competitive game environment, and play a variety of team sports.  Although this is an opportunity to compete with one another, good sportsmanship and safety will is the first priority.  There are over 60 students participating.

Instrumental Music – Approximately 38 students participated twice a week in instrumental music, which includes strings, woodwind and brass.

Student Council – Ninety-one students were elected student representatives and alternates for each half of the year in grades 1-5.  The council met twice a month during lunch and sponsored school, community and world wide projects, including; the Great Pumpkin contest, helping BCHSA with Sock Hop and LipSync, lollipop sales, and Caring Coins with a donation to the Red Cross for Tsunami Relief

Colorado Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl – This is a statewide computer competition, in which 175 Bear Creek 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders work in teams to answer questions in all areas of academics, sports, entertainment, and trivia.

Chess Club – More than 50 students participated in this after-school club. Students of all abilities learned rules, strategy, and sportsmanship. Students competed against other schools.

University of Colorado Law School Trial Advocacy Class – Two fifth grade classes visited the CU School of Law to learn about the judicial process.  Several students participated in a mock trial conducted by law students.

Girls on the Run--After school program that combines training for a 5K race with a fun, health education lesson plan. Open to all 5th grade girls.

Recycling Program – All students and staff participated in a program to recycle paper, newspaper, and aluminum.  We saved 40 trees this year.  Fourth grade students participated in an Eco-cycle Waste Free Lunch Program.

Elementary Spanish Program, French and Italian – Students met once or twice per week in small groups to learn these languages.

Track and Field – This is an all-school activity in the spring.  Students in 1st through 5th grade participated during physical education classes.  All students win ribbons.

Jump Rope for Heart – Students jumped rope to demonstrate their fitness and the importance of exercise for healthy hearts.  All students in first through fifth grade participated during grade-level physical education classes.  The event culminates the unit on heart health education and awareness activities and is also a fundraiser for the American Heart Association.  Bear Creek students raised over $2396.40

Read-a-thon – This Home and School Association fund-raiser supports reading efforts at school and at home.  93% of the students participated and read for 208,305 minutes and raised over $4,800 for the school.

Book Bites Book Club – 5th grade girls meet in the library to eat  lunch and discuss a high-interest book.  Club meets six times per year and is open to all 5th grade girls.

Buddy Classes – All six levels worked together on projects and academic areas.

Science Matters in Colorado – A tuition-based after-school science class available to all K-5 students.  Topics included:  “Gearing Up,” “Countertop Chemistry,” and “Mysteries of Egypt.”

Community Service Projects – Students participated in various projects to contribute to our community.  Projects this year included:  American Heart Association, EFAA, Community Food Share, Share-a-Gift Toy Collection, Rotary Club Coat Drive.  In addition, a majority of our students participated on Halloween evening and raised $1464.68 for UNICEF, which was almost 1/3 of the money raised in Boulder.

Colorado Children’s Book Award – Students grades K-5 read books which were nominated for the Colorado Children’s Book award and voted for their favorite book.

Art Shows – Bear Creek art students had their work displayed at the Boulder Public Library, (Main, George Reynolds and Meadows), Boulder Valley Credit Union, Cover of Boulder County Kids 

Annual Performance Days – Eighty-seven students who take private music lessons performed for their classmates during music classes.
           
National Geographic Geography Bee – Twenty-four students participated in the geography bee.
           
CU Science Explorers – Ten fifth graders participated in hands-on workshops held on the CU-Boulder campus.
           
Stock Market Game – Ten students participated in a ten week real-world simulation Stock Market Game designed to give students an introduction to the U.S. financial system.
           
BVSD Literacy Magazine – Twelve writers submitted work to the BVSD Literacy Magazine.
           
Math Olympiads – Over a dozen students explored a mathematical topic or strategy in depth in this weekly problem-solving enrichment activity.
           
Lunch Bunch – Most fifth grade students participated during the school year and talked about a variety of issues including transition to middle school, as well as social academic challenges.
           
Homework Club – Fifth graders have the opportunity to receive extra support with homework one time per week.

Unicycle Club – In its first year of existence, the unicycle club grew to more than 30 members. In addition to learning how to ride a unicycle, the club put on an end-of-the-year assembly.
           
Writer’s Workshop – Twelve fourth grade students participated in an after-school writing workshop that met 12 times over the winter months to expand their writing skills.

Shelf Elf Library Helper Program – 5th grade students volunteer in the library one lunch recess per week for a month to help keep our library looking great.  Open to all 5th grade students who complete an application.

Juggling Club Meets Monday morning at 7:45. All students are welcome.
