ESL
( English as a Second Language)

Many of our students have a first language other than English. In addition to their homeroom time, they spend time each day with their ESL teachers. These teachers have expertise in helping second language learners to read, write, and speak English. What lucky children they are to be able to speak more than one language. We are very fortunate to have a diverse population. All our children benefit by learning about the many cultures represented by our students.

Literacy Team
The Literacy team joins with the classroom teachers during
Guided Reading to offer small group instruction to our
Kindergarten through 3rd grade students.
Jan Kardatzke (Literacy Teacher)also works with our
4th and 5th graders during Literature Circles in the afternoon.

Flooding At Emerald
Flooding is a method designed to provide children with 30-45
minutes of intensive small group reading instruction using a guided
reading format. This occurs daily as part of a 3 hour literacy block
and all children in K-3 are involved. The students are grouped by
guided reading levels and assessed weekly so that they can change
groups as needed. This assessment also guides daily instruction. At Emerald the "flooding" teachers include teachers from the
classroom, literacy, Title 1,library, ESL, special education and high-
ly trained tutors. With up to 15 teachers the groups are no larger than 6 students. Groups needing more intervention will be even smaller. Daily "flooding" allows us to meet the reading needs of all students no matter what level they are reading.

Guided Reading
Guided Reading is a type of small group instruction in which children read books at their instructional level and receive direct instruction in decoding and reading strategies from the teacher. Using books at the students' instructional level allows them to practice these strategies as they read and also to develop fluency.

Some other key components of Guided Reading include the following:
1. Prereading strategies are taught.
2. Choral and partner reading are used.
3. Ongoing assessment guides instruction.
4. Groups are flexible and students change groups as needed.
5. Word analysis skills are taught and practiced.
6. Writing is included in each lesson.
7. Sets of leveled books are used.
8. Comprehension is continually monitored.

 CLIP

(Collaborative Literacy Intervention Program)
Kim Gustafson
kim.gustafson@bvsd.org

Emerald is fortunate to be able to offer CLIP to our 1st graders. CLIP is a one on one tutoring program. A CLIP trained teacher works with one child at a time for 30 minutes per day in reading and writing. CLIP is an acceleration program to help the child progress quickly to grade level performance. The teacher is able to meet individual needs by building on the child's strengths. CLIP encourages the child to be an independent problem solver and it enhances the child's self-esteem as they achieve success.

Seven teachers at Emerald have had the CLIP training. Kim Gustafson is the head CLIP teacher and she teaches CLIP students 1/2 time and Title1 students 1/2 time. The other CLIP trained teachers are using CLIP strategies in their classrooms and/or clipping one student at a time when their classroom teaching schedule permits.
