WALK & ROLL

The Walk & Roll committee encourages students to take alternative transportation to and from school for their own health and the health of the environment. It’s also plain fun – we’ve even had students arrive on pogo sticks and stilts. Our motto is “Everything Counts!” If you live too far away to walk or bike, consider bus riding, carpooling and even parking your car one or two blocks away from school. We have ongoing programs, and special events throughout the year. To volunteer, please contact Monique Cole, (303) 449-2959 or monique@moniquecole.com

YEAR-ROUND
Park & Walk: Park your car at least one or two blocks away and walk students to and from school. This relieves traffic congestion in front of the school, making it safer for everyone. Make it fun with a scooter or skateboard, or designate meeting points to Walk & Roll with a group!

Neighborhood “Pools”: Coordinate with neighbors and get a group together for fun, convenience, and helping the environment. A special page has been set up to coordinate sharing of rides or groups of walkers and bikers: http://flatirons.erideshare.com/

Carbon Challenge: Each morning in the classrooms, students put a pinto bean into the Walk & Roll jar if they used alternative transportation that day (Everything Counts). At the end of the year, students estimate how many beans were collected and the closest guess receives a prize. In our first year (’08-’09) we collected 30,000 beans, representing about 6,000 gallons of gas saved – and all the resulting pollution!

iWalk: International Walk to School Day: Wednesday, October 7, 7:20 am-8:10 am
Celebrate with students from around the world by walking or biking to school. Snacks will be served upon arrival, starting at 7:20 am for those students who have choir practice. If we have enough parent volunteers to lead the “parade,” school buses will stop at the County Courthouse, allowing students to walk a half-mile to school. For more information on the international event, go to http://www.walktoschool.org/

BVSD Bike to School Day on Earth Day: Thursday, April 22, 7:45 am – 8:10 am
In celebration of Earth Day, students are encouraged to walk or bike to school, where they will be greeted with goodies. We’ll be competing against other schools in the Boulder Valley School District for highest participation, so please register your child here:
