New Families
Welcome to Heatherwood Elementary.
We’re so glad you’ve joined us. Our teachers and staff welcome children with open arms, providing a nurturing environment and the building blocks for a solid academic foundation. Heatherwood encourages students’ exploration and learning while challenging them to grow to their full potential.
Heatherwood Elementary is a neighborhood school that serves approximately 385 students. Our students live in the many Gunbarrel neighborhoods and the surrounding communities. Over ten percent of our students are open enrolled and live outside of our attendance area.
Heatherwood’s academic strength lies in our balanced and integrated curricular program. Children master and apply literacy and mathematics skills through learning that emphasizes research, problem solving, simulations and technology. The instructional program does not end with the acquisition of discrete skills but goes on to teach the use of those skills in higher-level problem solving. The success of the educational program can be credited to Heatherwood’s interdisciplinary instruction with PE and the fine arts programs as well as the regionally recognized teaching staff. In 2006, Heatherwood students’ continuous academic improvement earned Heatherwood an “excellent” overall academic performance rating.
The social and emotional development of our children is of utmost importance to the Heatherwood community. The Heatherwood staff takes pride in creating a warm, welcoming and safe learning environment where all children are accepted. The Heatherwood student body developed the Heatherwood Constitution that all students adhere to and recite on a weekly basis. The Constitution fosters diversity and acceptance.
The success of Heatherwood students begins with a high quality dedicated staff, continues with emotionally, socially, and educationally nurtured children and is completed by the support and involvement of parents and community members. Each year classroom volunteers log over 2,500 hours. Parent volunteers serve on committees that are fundamental to the success of our school. These committees include PTO, SIT, and various other volunteer opportunities. The PTO funding is critical to the success of many Heatherwood programs and contributes directly to the school improvement goals.
We believe “Success Starts Here” and our goal is to build a solid foundation for a lifetime of success for every student. This belief is incorporated into every learning and social experience at Heatherwood.
Sincerely,
Larry Orobona
Principal
