Ms. Kelley has been teaching at Heatherwood since 1990, and she is one of the teachers on the fifth grade team.  "Heatherwood and I go a long way back," she says.  "My daughter went to school here.  I worked as a paraprofessional here, and now I'm back into teaching here.  Heatherwood is my home away from home."
Ms. Kelley was born and raised in the heart of the Deep South, Louisiana.  She attended Louisiana Tech University and began teaching upon graduation.  After a move to Atlanta, Georgia, she left the field of education, married, and raised a family.  During this hiatus from teaching, Ms. Kelley took on part-time jobs in data processing and in theatrical costuming.  Upon her move to Colorado, Ms. Kelley once again immersed herself in the educational field by volunteering at Heatherwood and then joining the staff as a paraprofessional in 1981 and as a teacher in 1990.
When asked her favorite aspect of teaching, Ms. Kelley replied, "I love watching kids get excited about learning and the 'Aha!' moments.  From this excitement comes self-motivation, confidence, and success."
Ms. Kelley enjoys reading mysteries and historical fiction, quilting, walking, writing, and spending time with her daughter, son-in-law, and grandson.  She also enjoys playing with her menagerie of animals whenever possible.

 Student Work

A sample of last year's student work is displayed below.

Prompt:  Getting up in the morning is something we do every day, but it’s not always easy.  Write an account of the first half hour of your typical day.

I wake up.  I get out of bed.  I walk halfway downstairs and trip on the dog and smash into the wall.  I decide it’s a better idea to keep my eyes open.  I walk to the couch and lie down on the couch and rest.  After about a minute and a half, I get up and open the fridge.  I get some Nova lox and start muchin’ (actually chewing . . . and chewing . . . and chewing).  Then I go to the bathroom.  When I’m done, I stick my head in the sink and drink some fresh water.  “Ahhh,” I sigh.  Then I go onto the computer and watch a music video on YouTube.
When I’m done I feel hungry again, and so I walk into the kitchen and see mom and Adam and Becca, too.  I see the clock.  It reads 7:17.  I sit at the table and get an English muffin with cream cheese and Nova lox (See chewing/ munching – page 1.).  I eat mine and Becca’s.
Then suddenly we’re rushing and I find myself running upstairs, down the hall, and into my room.  I pull off my jammies and rush to put clothes on (Sometimes I stop at underwear and do some modeling moves while singing a pop song.)  I rush downstairs and into the bathroom.  I brush my teeth the BEST I can, and do my hair.
I run to the mudroom to get my shoes on.  And then I run out the garage door to find the minivan halfway out of the driveway.  We drive to the bus stop, and I get on the bust just in time to go.
