General Information
School Hours
School begins at 8:30AM and ends at 3:00PM.
AM Kindergarten & K-Care: 8:30AM – 11:25AM
PM Kindergarten & K-Care: 12:05PM – 3:00PM
The playground is supervised for 15 minutes before school and for 15 minutes after school. Students should not arrive before 8:15AM because there is no supervision prior to this time. Students should leave the school grounds promptly after dismissal.
Absence and Tardiness
Consistent, on-time attendance is important and related directly to academic success.
Please call the Mesa Attendance Line at (720) 561-3002 before 8:45AM if your child will be absent or tardy to school.
Children who arrive after 8:30AM are considered tardy and must sign in at the office before going to class.
School Closure
Occasionally, bad weather forces the school district to cancel school for the day because of unsafe road conditions caused by snow, ice, or other weather-related problems. Immediately after the decision to cancel school has been made, announcements will be made on local radio and television stations.
The following media carry Boulder Valley School closure announcements:

Health Room
The Health Room is staffed four hours per day by a paraprofessional trained in First Aid/CPR. We rely on volunteer help to keep the Health Room staffed at all other times. There is also an Emergency Response Team (First Aid/CPR trained staff) to handle severe injuries.
Each year, vision and hearing screenings are conducted as well as scoliosis screenings. We keep track of all immunizations and physicals. If your child has a significant health issue, e.g., asthma or allergies, please inform us so that we can avoid any complications.
Kindergartners are not allowed to attend school until they have presented complete immunization information, or a parent has signed a plan of intent to complete the immunization, or if parents have signed an exemption.
If your child has been ill, please give him or her adequate time to recuperate before returning to school. Rushing a child back only makes it difficult on your child and increases the chances of infecting other children. If your child is on antibiotics, please do not send him or her to school until he or she has been on medication a full 24 hours. State law requires that health room staff have a form, available in the office and health room, signed by both parent and physician to dispense prescription medication.
Field Trips
A permission slip will be sent home with each student prior to every field trip. The slip must be signed by a parent or legal guardian and returned to the teacher in order for the student to participate. Teachers will notify parents about other specific needs such as volunteers, sack lunches, or donations.
Lunch
Hot lunch is available daily.
Check the BVSD web page for lunch menu at : http://bvsd.org/food/pages/LunchMenu.aspx
Also visit the Food Service web site of the district at http://bvsd.org/food/Pages/default.aspx, for more information.
Please call the Mesa Attendance Line at (720) 561-3002 before 8:45AM if your child will be tardy to school and wants a hot lunch.
Recess
Students should assume they will be outdoors every day and dress for the weather conditions. Recess will be held inside only under the most extreme conditions. Even a brief outdoor recess is better than none at all.
Student Drop-off / Pick-up / Parking
To ensure student safety, students are to be dropped off or picked up in front of school on the west side of Lehigh. Parking is not allowed in these curbside spaces between 8:15–8:45AM and 3:15–3:45PM.
- Parents must stay in their vehicles when using curbside spaces during these times at the beginning and at the end of the school day.
- Please leave as soon as you determine your children are safely on school grounds or as soon as your children are in your car after school to leave space available for other parents to drop off or pick up their children.
- Between 8:45AM and 3:15PM, and after 3:45PM, these curbside spaces are available for parking.
The parking lot on the south side of the building is available for short- and long-term parking before, during, and after school. If you wish to walk your child into school or pick up him or her during and after school, please walk your child through the parking lot.
The parking lot should not be used for dropping your child off in the mornings or picking your child up after school. Please use the designated area in front of the building on Lehigh Street.
Dogs
Dogs are not allowed in the building unless they are for Show & Tell or other special occasions. Dogs on the school grounds should be on a leash and supervised by an adult.
Bicycles
Fourth and fifth grade students are permitted to ride their bicycles to school. Third grade students may ride bikes in May and June after Mesa’s bicycle safety program has been presented. Students should walk their bikes when on school property and lock them in bike racks.
Class Parties and Birthdays
Each class usually has two parties during the school year: Halloween and Valentine’s Day. Room parents coordinate and plan these parties.
If your child would like to bring a treat to help celebrate his or her birthday, please send something that is simple and easy to distribute. Classroom teachers appreciate being informed a few days before your child’s birthday.
Please do not use the classroom to distribute invitations for birthday parties unless every child in the class is invited.
Discipline
Mesa is fortunate to have students who display appropriate conduct. Our school climate reflects our belief that all students can be responsible at school.
A safe, friendly, nurturing, and positive environment supports our primary focus at school – the education of your children. As parents, you are your child’s first teacher and through example and direct teaching instill in children habits of acceptable behavior and positive attitude. We ask that you support and assist Mesa in individual concerns regarding behavior. We believe that self-concept is a prime consideration, that students have control over their behavior, and that students take responsibility for their own actions.
We expect students to:
o Show respect for others’ feelings, rights, time and property
o Be responsible for their own behaviors
o Work and play safely, and
o Use acceptable language.
Mesa teachers usually use Time Out for inappropriate classroom behavior. More serious infractions such as:
o Hurtful physical or verbal behavior
o Defiance of rightful authority
o Inappropriate language or gesture
o Destruction of school or personal property
o Continuous disruptive behavior
will result in an In-School Separation (ISS). Parents are notified of any ISS a student receives and are asked to sign and return ISS forms to teachers. A parent, principal, teacher, and student conference is required after the third ISS.
Students may be suspended and expulsion is mandatory for possession of weapons, first or second degree assault, sale of drugs or controlled substances, robbery, and habitual disruptive behavior. Please consult the BVSD Students’ and Parents’ Rights and Responsibilities booklet and the Mesa Mustang Code of Conduct. Copies of these booklets are available in the school office.
