Transition and Employment

Transition services are a coordinated set of outcomes and activities based upon needs, preferences, and interests of students, to promote effective movement from school to post-school activities. Transition for secondary students, age 14 and older, may encompass evaluation, related services, community experiences, daily living skills, vocational training, and integrated employment.

BVSD has transition services available through the 18 to 21 Transition Programs, School to Work Alliance Program (SWAP), and the Employment Team:

18 to 21 Transition Programs

Bridges Transition Program:

This program focuses on the domains of Career/Employment, Community Involvement, Daily Living Skills/Residential, Social/Interpersonal, and Recreation/Leisure. Students entering the Bridges Program must have enough credits to graduate, but must not have received their diploma. Motivation to succeed in adult life is an essential ingredient for success in this program, along with family/parent support for independence.

PATHWAYS Transition Program:

Pathways Transition Program provides students with moderate to severe disabilities the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to successfully move from a school-based environment to a supported adult program. Students must be 18 - 21 years old and preferably have completed 4 years of high school. Instruction will offered in the transition domains of Daily Living, Recreation/Leisure, Community, and Social/Interpersonal. Opportunities for Vocational Training will also be offered if applicable.

SWAP (School to Work Alliance Program)

SWAP is a collaborative program between BVSD and the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation that serves individuals with mild to moderate disabilities who are between 16 and 25 years of age. The SWAP participant will show a readiness for employment and will be available to work. Students with documented disabilities or who suspect they may have a disability -- and who have dropped out of school -- are eligible for this program.

The Employment Team

The Employment Team focuses on meeting the community-based employment needs of students in special education ages 14-18. Basic job skills training and ongoing support are available as determined by the IEP team. Training may be centered on work-related behaviors, job seeking skills, resume writing, and interviewing skills.
