Meet the BVSD Board of Education Candidates
The Board of Education is made up of seven elected volunteers, representing seven geographic areas of our community. This November, four seats are up for election.
Acting together, the Board of Education does the following:
- Acts as a bridge between the community and the school district
- Hires and supervises the superintendent
- Provides the district with high-level guidance/direction
- Creates and revises BVSD’s policies

Neil Fishman was educated in the public schools (K-12; BA/MS, geology, CU), is an award-winning research geologist, and is an ardent supporter of public schools. He’s worked for decades locally in the social justice arena with non-profits, governments, and BVSD. He played a pivotal role in including gender identity/expression in BVSD’s non-discrimination policy. And he was a front-line activist working collaboratively with BVSD and municipalities to get progressive social studies standards passed by the CO Board of Education. He has a demonstrated record in addressing difficult and complex problems, which will be critical as BVSD addresses declining enrollment.

Stuart Lord, an accomplished educator and advocate, empowers students and promotes leadership. He's raised $150+ million for education, striving for quality access. As CEO of Delta Developmental, LLC in Boulder, Colorado, leveraging prior roles as Dean and Associate Provost at DePauw University and Dartmouth. Stuart led the President's Summit for America's Future during President Bill Clinton's tenure and served as Naropa University's first African-American President. Engaged in BVSD Partnership Council and NAACP PAC, his journey from New Rochelle foster care to degrees from Texas Christian University, Princeton Theological Seminary, and United Theological Seminary underscores his unwavering commitment to educational excellence.

Alex moved to Boulder in 1992. He and his wife raised two children who attended Community Montessori, Southern Hills, and Fairview. They were both active in their kids’ schools and the district throughout their schooling. He has 30 years of experience leading Colorado and national non-profits and governmental entities focused on education and children's policy. He is committed to public education, and has worked to promote school quality, advance student equity, and improve outcomes for children. He has led various non-profit boards and state task forces, bringing people together to find common sense solutions. He earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from CU Boulder.

My journey has taken me on a diverse career path, from studying Chemical Engineering, to becoming a software engineer, cooking on a food truck, managing an insurance agency, and founding my own tech company. While these roles may seem unrelated, they all share a common thread – they represent my unwavering pursuit of passion and the courage to explore new horizons. I believe in revisiting and reimagining our curriculum to make it more engaging and relevant to the interests of our students. I wish our educational system to be a guiding light for all students as they explore their own paths.

Lalenia grew up in Boulder and has three children in public school. She has worked in BVSD classrooms for six years as a Sexual Assault Prevention Educator. Lalenia currently serves on the BVSD Title IX Advisory Council, works as a Restorative Justice Facilitator for the District Attorney's Office, and recently completed BVSD's Leadership Academy. She will utilize her strong community relationships to promote mental health, safety and equity for our students. Lalenia is proudly endorsed by BVSD’s Teachers Union and will work to support academic excellence and meaningful pathways for all students post graduation.

Jason Unger is running for BVSD School Board to represent District A. He has spent his life working to improve public education for all kids. He started as a 4th grade teacher in Compton, CA, where he was awarded the 2001 National Elementary Teacher of the Year. Jason worked as an elementary school administrator, and then as the education advisor to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada). Learn about the candidates running for the Board of Education during the forum hosted by the BVSD District Parent Council, Impact on Education, and the League of Women Voters Boulder County.
The Candidate Forum is a great opportunity to learn about the candidates who are running in each of the four open seats -- A, C, D, and G.
The Board of Education Candidate Forum will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at the BVSD Education Center.

Want to know more about the Candidates?
Our community will be holding several Board of Education candidate forums this election season. Each of BVSD's available director district seats is contested, so you will want to be informed about where each candidate stands on the issues that are facing the school district. As a voter, you will cast your vote for a director in each open seat, A, C, D, and G, as candidates, although they must live in the director district in which they run, do run at-large.

So you want to run for School Board, now what?

Confirm your Director District. If you are interested in serving on the BVSD Board of Education, you will want to make sure that you live in a Director District that has a seat that will be open for election this November. Those seats are A, C, D and G.
- Do your homework. Learn everything you can about BVSD. Chat with current Board members about your time commitment and the expectations of a Board member.
- Register on TRACER. Once you announce your candidacy, you will want to register on the Secretary of State's TRACER website.
- Pull a petition. On August 9, 2023, you can begin picking up petitions from the school district. You will want to make an appointment with Laura Shafer, the district's Designated Election Official. She can be reached at 720-561-5114.
- Collect signatures. Candidates must collect a minimum of 50 certified signatures from registered voters who reside within the Boulder Valley School District boundaries.
- Return your petition. Petitions must be returned no later than 4:30pm on Friday, September 1, 2023 to the Boulder Valley School District, specifically to Laura Shafer. Petitions and all accompanying documents must be notarized prior to return.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR SCHOOL DIRECTORS. BOULDER VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. RE-2. BOULDER AND GILPIN COUNTIES AND THE CITY AND COUNTY OF BROOMFIELD, COLORADO
The Boulder Valley School District No. RE-2 in the Counties of Boulder and Gilpin, and the City and County of Broomfield, State of Colorado, calls for nomination of candidates for school directors to be placed on the ballot for the regular biennial school election to be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.
At this election four directors will be elected representing the following director districts: A, C, D, and G for a term of office of four (4) years. To be qualified, a candidate must have been a registered elector of the school district for at least 12 consecutive months before the election and a resident of the director district which will be represented. A person is ineligible to run for school director if he or she has been convicted of committing a sexual offense against a child.
A person who desires to be a candidate for school director shall file a written notice of intention to be a candidate, a nomination petition signed by at least fifty (50) eligible electors who are registered to vote in the regular biennial school election along with circulator’s affidavits, a notarized acceptance of nomination, and an affidavit of school director candidate on qualifications for office.
Nomination petitions may be obtained at the Superintendent’s office at the Boulder Valley School District Education Center, 6500 Arapahoe Road, in Boulder, Colorado. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Appointments are recommended.
Completed petitions shall be submitted to Laura Shafer, the School District’s designated election official, no later than 4:30 p.m. on September 1, 2023. Appointments are recommended.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, the Board of Education of Boulder Valley School District No. RE-2, in the Counties of Boulder and Gilpin, and the City and County of Broomfield, State of Colorado, has caused this call for nominations to be posted on the BVSD website on August 10, 2023.
