CODE OF ETHICS FOR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS

The Board commits itself and its members to professional, lawful, and ethical conduct. The Board, acting in its legislative capacity, shall have the authority and responsibility to interpret and apply these standards of conduct. Members of the Board of Education will strive to improve public education and will:

  1. Represent the interests of the School District. This accountability to the whole School District supersedes any conflicting loyalty to other advocacy or interest groups and membership on other boards or staffs. It also supersedes any personal interest as a parent of a student in the School District or as a family member of an employee of the School District.

  2. Recognize the importance of the community leadership role and not allow personal conduct to endanger the School District’s public image, credibility, or ability to accomplish its ends.

  3. Endeavor to make policy decisions only after full discussion at publicly held Board meetings.

  4. Render all decisions based on the available facts and independent judgment, and refuse to surrender Board Member judgment to individuals or special interest groups.

  5. Encourage the free expression of opinion by all Board Members and promote dialogue and civil debate.

  6. Seek systematic communications between the Board and all elements of the community, respecting the rights of Board and community members to hold differing views.

  7. Communicate to other Board Members and the Superintendent expressions of public reaction to Board policies and school programs.

  8. Take advantage of each Board Member’s strengths to work collaboratively and in a cooperative manner.

  9. Respect the confidentiality of information that is privileged under applicable laws, including specifically information shared in executive session.

  10. Be informed about current educational issues by individual study and through participation in programs providing needed information, such as those sponsored by state and national school boards associations.
