BASIC INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM
Middle School Requirements
A "credit" at the middle school shall be considered the equivalent of a year-long experience for a minimum of 40 minutes per school day. Each school shall meet or exceed the minimum requirements for contact time as prescribed by state law. Schools
may establish requirements beyond the minimums listed below provided such requirements are consistent with District policy and appropriate middle school philosophy and practices. It is expected that the traditional disciplines listed below will be studied in an integrated context to the degree possible and are listed separately as a means of ensuring appropriate time and attention to each curriculum area in such an integrated setting.
Each school shall determine its course offerings in the exploratory/elective area consistent with the list of approved courses maintained by the School District. In this regard schools shall offer regularly scheduled curricular experiences which require students to participate in a wide variety of instructional activities designed to develop and expand personal interests and skills and to allow students to be exposed to as many disciplines as possible before entering high school. Thus, students will be encouraged to
explore a wide range of educational experiences at the middle level. The offering of exploratory and elective courses will be determined by each school and may include but need not be limited to the following: Art, Business, Computer Technology, Drama, Foreign Cultures, Industrial Technology, Life Management, and Music.
