Boulder Valley School District

SCHOOL YEAR / SCHOOL CALENDAR
The Boulder Valley School District conducts a regular day school program for students from preschool through 12th grade, with an academic year in accordance with Colorado law. The Board shall adopt a calendar that supports the district’s educational objectives and applies to all district schools, except charter schools.
Development Process
Tentative school calendars shall be developed with input from School District staff, students, and parents. Input shall be collected through posting on the district website and public comment opportunities at Board meetings, and may also be collected through a taskforce and/or outreach to district groups. The Board may be kept apprised of the development process and shall be presented with draft calendar(s) no later than January 10.
At a meeting in February, the Board shall formally adopt the proposed school calendar(s) or set a specific date for adoption for any revised calendar. If the Board revises the tentative calendar, the Board shall make the revised calendar available for at least one month prior to adoption to allow additional input. Subsequent revisions may be discussed and/or adopted in properly noticed Board meetings.
At its discretion, the Board may adopt a calendar for a one-year period or for multiple years.
A copy of the adopted calendar must be provided to all parents/guardians of students enrolled in district schools. Any change in the calendar except for emergency closings or other unforeseen circumstances must be preceded by adequate and timely notice of no less than 30 days.
Requirements
1. At least 176 days during which students are "actively engaged in the educational process". For purposes of this policy, the Board defines “actively engaged in the educational process” as time when students are working toward achieving educational objectives under the direction of a licensed teacher, including: classroom instruction time; assessment time; individual student work time while at school, including independent study, study hall, and research; school-related field trips; and, assemblies. "Actively engaged in the educational process" does not include: time students spend before or after school, waiting for the bus, or at recess. When appropriate and permissible under Colorado law, actively engaged in the educational process may also include asynchronous and remote learning.
2. Additional contract days (10 or as otherwise required by law or negotiated agreement) allocated for in-service preparation/work days or professional development.

School Calendars
The Board authorizes the administration in each school building to issue a school calendar based on the district calendar and in accordance with this policy.
