ADDITIONAL FACTORS FOR SCHOOL CALENDARS

Associated Policy: ICA - School Year/School Calendar

Factors to be considered overall, with no assigned priority or weight, when establishing the calendar for the school district include:

  • Provide a calendar that is aligned across schools and levels.
  • Balance instructional days across both semesters.
  • Allow professional development to be scheduled throughout the school year and at times when attendance is likely to be high. 
  • End first semester prior to winter break.
  • Consider impact of climate change and weather 
  • Limit the number of partial school weeks (fewer than five days)
  • Avoid scheduling breaks that would interfere with student participation in key assessments, including on achievement, for college admission, for advanced placement and International Baccalaureate, and language development.
  • Address CHSAA athletics and activities calendar requirements
  • Consider the calendars of the University of Colorado-Boulder , and other neighboring school districts where a significant portion of BVSD staff live.
