During NASA Astronaut Jessica Watkin’s recent visit to her alma maters, Louisville Middle School and Fairview High School, she shared her appreciation for the PK-12 educators that helped to set her on her path.

“I'm absolutely super grateful for the education that I received here in Boulder Valley School District,” Watkins said. “I really feel that I was able to explore my different interests and passions, find what I I love to do and really started to fall in love with science right here in these halls.”

Last year Watkins became the third BVSD graduate to go to space, following 1992 Centaurus High School graduate, U.S. Air Force Colonel Jack Fischer and 1942 Boulder High School graduate, U.S. Navy Commander Scott Carpenter. She made history during her mission to the International Space Station, becoming the first Black woman on a long-duration space mission.

We know – thanks to BVSD’s challenging, engaging and relevant instruction – as well as the guidance of our outstanding educators – many of our graduates have gone on to greatness in industry, politics, athletics… you name it.

In fact, recently, another BVSD graduate, Kai Kloepfer (Fairview, 2015) made headlines when an innovative idea he began to research as a high school sophomore in his Science Research Seminar class made it to market. It is a smart gun with a biometric lock, that aims to prevent accidental shootings and suicides.

“All of my work on Biofire started with a science and technology communication seminar taught by Dr. Paul Strode at Fairview High School. I started working on this project as a result of that class.

I would definitely say that Dr. Strode’s advice and meaningful guidance throughout the period was very instrumental in the project’s initial success in the science fair. And yes, now that project has snowballed into a real company 10 years later,”  Kloepfer said. ”Dr. Strode was one of the best teachers I've ever had. A couple of my best friends from high school are now pursuing their PhDs because of what Dr. Strode got them interested in.”

Kloepfer recently spoke to Bloomberg and told them that his project was inspired by was inspired by the Aurora Theatre Shooting in 2012, which killed 12 people and injured 70 more.

“At the time it was the worst mass shooting in history and it happened right down the road from where I grew up,” Kloepfer said. “I was fortunate enough to not to have to think about gun violence or gun deaths and that was really my first sort of encounter with the topic. I was just starting to grow up and think about these kinds of topics as a 15 year old and started thinking about, ‘how could we do something about this?’”

While, back then he couldn’t actually work on a firearm, his innovative design earned an award at the prestigious Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

“The year I went, it was the top 1,500 out of over 8 million people,” Kloepfer told Bloomberg.

He credits his teachers in BVSD for pushing him to new heights.

“One of the things I really enjoyed about being at Fairview is there was an opportunity to take very high level classes from very experienced teachers,” Kloepfer said. “My teachers definitely didn't let me let me slack off, but they were really helpful in terms of being flexible and accommodating. At times when I had to go participate in the science fair, so many of my teachers worked with me to move deadlines around so that I could actually still get the work done but also apply myself to this passion project. Their flexibility absolutely helped make it possible for me to do both.”

Meanwhile, two 2015 Nederland Middle-Senior High School graduates, Anne Cox and Dante Pasionek are working for a software company here in Boulder that is making some important breakthroughs with medical devices.

“I'm a software engineer at Tencentric. We are a contract design and manufacturing firm. So we specialize in vitro diagnostics, medical devices and lab equipment. We focus a lot in spaces like cell and gene therapy,” Pasionek explained. “I really enjoy working on medical devices and helping people out. A lot of what we do has helped propel a lot of different fields to previously unthinkable levels in their research. So that's been a really exciting thing to be a part of, and I just like seeing the impact that I get to make.”

He says that he is grateful for the experiences he had in BVSD and his teachers at NED.

“I am so thankful for that entire school, the entire staff.They've sent a lot of kids on really great tracks in life,” Pasionek said. “ I am deeply indebted to Nederland High School.”

Los exalumnos del BVSD alcanzan alturas impresionantes: Ayúdenos a celebrar los logros de los antiguos estudiantes del BVSD

Durante la reciente visita de la astronauta de la NASA Jessica Watkins a su alma máter, la Escuela Secundaria Louisville y la Escuela Preparatoria Fairview, compartió su agradecimiento por los educadores PK-12 que la ayudaron a encaminar su carrera.

«Estoy absolutamente super agradecida por la educación que recibí aquí, en el Distrito Escolar del Valle de Boulder», dijo Watkins. «De verdad siento que pude explorar mis diferentes intereses y pasiones, encontrar lo que me gusta hacer y realmente empecé a enamorarme de la ciencia aquí mismo, en estos pasillos».

El año pasado Watkins se convirtió en la tercera graduada del BVSD en ir al espacio, tras el egresado en 1992 de la Escuela Preparatoria Centaurus, el coronel de la Fuerza Aérea de EE.UU. Jack Fischer y el egresado en 1942 de la Escuela Preparatoria Boulder, el comandante de la Marina de EE.UU. Scott Carpenter. Hizo historia durante su misión a la Estación Espacial Internacional, convirtiéndose en la primera mujer negra en una misión espacial de larga duración.

Sabemos que, gracias a la instrucción desafiante, atractiva y relevante del BVSD, así como a la orientación de nuestros destacados educadores, muchos de nuestros egresados han llegado a la grandeza en la industria, la política, el atletismo... lo que sea.

De hecho, recientemente, otro egresado del BVSD, Kai Kloepfer (Fairview, 2015) fue noticia cuando llegó al mercado una idea innovadora que empezó a investigar como estudiante de segundo año de preparatoria en su clase de Seminario de Investigación Científica. Es una pistola inteligente con una cerradura biométrica, que tiene como objetivo prevenir disparos accidentales y suicidios.

«Todo mi trabajo en Biofire comenzó con un seminario de comunicación de ciencia y tecnología enseñado por el Dr. Paul Strode en la Escuela Preparatoria Fairview. Empecé a trabajar en este proyecto como resultado de esa clase.

Definitivamente diría que el abundante consejo y orientación del Dr. Strode durante todo ese período fueron fundamentales para el éxito inicial del proyecto en la feria de ciencias. Y sí, ahora ese proyecto se ha convertido en una empresa real 10 años después”, dijo Kloepfer. "El Dr. Strode fue uno de los mejores maestros que he tenido. Un par de mis mejores amigos de la escuela preparatoria ahora están estudiando para obtener su doctorado debido a lo que les enseñó el Dr. Strode».

Recientemente habló con Bloomberg y les dijo que su proyecto fue inspirado por el tiroteo en el Teatro Aurora en 2012, que mató a 12 personas e hirió a 70 más.

«En aquel momento fue el peor tiroteo masivo de la historia y ocurrió justo al final de la calle donde crecí», dijo Kloepfer. «Tuve la suerte de no tener que pensar en la violencia armada o en las muertes por arma de fuego y ése fue realmente mi primer tipo de encuentro con el tema. Justo empezaba a madurar y a pensar en este tipo de temas cuando tenía 15 años y empecé a preguntarme "¿cómo podríamos hacer algo al respecto?"».

Mientras que, en ese entonces, no podía trabajar en un arma de fuego, su diseño innovador ganó un premio en la prestigiosa Feria Internacional de Ciencia e Ingeniería de Intel.

«El año que yo fui, estuve entre los 1,500 primeros de más de 8 millones de personas», declaró Kloepfer a Bloomberg.

Él le da crédito a sus maestros del BVSD por empujarlo a nuevas alturas.

«Una de las cosas que realmente disfruté de estar en Fairview es que tuve la oportunidad de tomar clases de muy alto nivel con maestros muy experimentados», dijo Kloepfer. «Mis maestros definitivamente no me dejaron ser flojo, y me ayudaron mucho en términos de ser flexibles y complacientes. A veces, cuando tenía que ir a participar en la feria de ciencias, muchos de mis maestros trabajaban conmigo para cambiar los plazos para que pudiera terminar el trabajo pero también dedicarme a este apasionante proyecto. Su flexibilidad totalmente me ayudó a hacer ambas cosas».

Mientras tanto, dos egresados en 2015 de la Escuela Secundaria y Preparatoria Nederland, Anne Cox y Dante Pasionek, trabajan para una empresa de software aquí en Boulder que hace importantes avances con dispositivos médicos.

«Soy ingeniero de software en Tencentric. Somos una empresa de diseño y fabricación por contrato. Por eso nos especializamos en diagnósticos in vitro, dispositivos médicos y equipos de laboratorio. Nos enfocamos mucho en espacios como la terapia celular y génica», explicó Pasionek. «Realmente disfruto trabajando en dispositivos médicos y ayudando a la gente. Mucho de lo que hacemos ha ayudado a impulsar muchos campos diferentes hasta niveles antes impensables en su investigación. Así que ha sido algo realmente emocionante formar parte de eso, y me gusta ver el impacto que puedo tener».

Dice que está agradecido por las experiencias que tuvo en el BVSD y sus maestros en NED.

«Estoy muy agradecido con toda esa escuela, con todo el personal. Han enviado a muchos niños por muy buenos caminos en la vida», dijo Pasionek. «Estoy profundamente en deuda con la Escuela Preparatoria Nederland».
