BVSD Athlete & Alum Selected to Compete in 2022 USA Special Olympics

This summer 54 athletes will represent Team Colorado at the 2022 USA Special Olympic Games in Orlando, Florida. Two of the distinguished athletes selected to compete include Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) student Michelle Zhang (tennis) and BVSD alum Leigh Shafer (swimming). 

The 2022 Special Olympics USA games gather more than 5,500 athletes and coaches from all 50 states and the Caribbean. The event is just two short weeks away (June 5-12, 2022) and both athletes are preparing for an unforgettable week.

Michelle Zhang, a sophomore at Monarch High School, will compete in both singles and doubles tennis. On top of wrapping up her club volleyball season, studying for finals and tennis practice, Michelle has to find a quick-fix for her broken racquet.

“My racquet broke yesterday, so I’m going to talk to my coach about where to have it fixed and how to get a back-up ordered in time for the games,” said Zhang. “Shipping a new racquet to my home will take too long; the event is only 2 weeks away!”

Michelle says she feels a little confident and a little unready heading into the national competition.

“When I arrive, I’ll be excited and nervous simultaneously. So I just focus on boosting my positive energy up before a match,” said Zhang.

Michelle has been practicing her tennis by competing against both boys and girls at her school, to ensure she is ready for any and all competition at the Special Olympics. “I don’t know if it will be coed or not, so I prepare for both.”

This is not Michelle’s first Special Olympics competition. While admitting she’s not much of a mountain person but enjoys skiing, Michelle has previously won gold medals in slalom in the 2017 and 2018 regional Special Olympics. In March of 2022 she received another special accolade as she was named the Special Olympics Colorado Athlete of the Month.

Going into the 2022 games Michelle says, “I’m feeling confident and am grateful for my teachers and coaches who have been supporting me. I don’t really get homesick, I like to travel so I’m ready to just enjoy myself at the event.”

Leigh Shafer is a graduate of Centaurus High School (2018) where she swam on the Warrior swim team for three years and was a member of Lafayette Seals swim team for three summers. 

After graduating from high school Leigh began swimming for the local Special Olympics team, Boulder EXPAND, where she earned several competition medals. At the 2019 State meet in Grand Junction, Leigh won three gold medals and led her team as the first athlete to enter the stadium during the opening ceremony.

As part of her preparation for the national Olympic Games, Leigh, along with Michelle, attended Team Colorado Special Olympics training camp at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs in April.

“I love swimming so much; seeing my friends on the team,” said Leigh. “I liked meeting the other athletes at the training camp.”

As one of only four swimmers on Team Colorado, Leigh will compete in the 50-meter butterfly, 50-meter freestyle, and in the medley relay where she typically swims the butterfly leg of the race.

The freestyle event is her favorite, “In freestyle I like to show off my speed in front of the boys,” she shares with a smile. Before a big race she focuses on “swimming fast and being a speed demon” and when the race is over she typically feels “dead tired and proud”.

“The best part of Special Olympics is being with friends, being around my parents and the excitement,” says Leigh. “I tell myself to stay on-track, don’t get distracted and also feel proud and go have fun.”

Leigh and Michelle both agree that one of the highlights of the trip will undoubtedly be the all-athlete visit to Walt Disney World.

“The first time I went to Disney was about 10 years ago when I was little,” said Michelle. “I’m excited to see how it has changed and am especially excited to go to the Magic Kingdom; I like seeing the characters.”

Leigh has also visited Disney before and says her favorite ride is “It’s a Small World After All”. She plans to wear the Colorado flag Mickey Mouse ears given to her at the Team Colorado send-off party to show her state pride.

Una atleta y una ex alumna del BVSD fueron seleccionadas para competir en las Olimpiadas Especiales de EE.UU. 2022

Este verano 54 atletas representarán al equipo de Colorado en los Juegos de las Olimpiadas Especiales de 2022 en Orlando, Florida. Dos de las distinguidas atletas seleccionadas para competir son la estudiante del Distrito Escolar del Valle de Boulder (BVSD) Michelle Zhang (tenis) y la ex alumna del BVSD Leigh Shafer (natación).  

Los juegos de las Olimpiadas Especiales de Estados Unidos 2022 reunirán a más de 5,500 atletas y entrenadores de 50 estados y el Caribe. El evento está a solo dos semanas (del 5 al 12 de junio de 2022) y ambas atletas se están preparando para una semana inolvidable.

Michelle Zhang, estudiante de segundo año de la Escuela Preparatoria Monarch, competirá en tenis individual y en dobles. Además de terminar su temporada de voleibol de club, estudiar para los exámenes finales y practicar tenis, Michelle tiene que encontrar una solución rápida para su raqueta rota.

“Ayer se me rompió la raqueta, así que voy a hablar con mi entrenador para que me la arregle y me pida una de repuesto a tiempo para los partidos”, dijo Zhang. “Enviar una raqueta nueva a mi casa tomará demasiado tiempo; ¡el evento está a solo dos semanas!”.

Michelle dice que se siente un poco confiada y un poco desprevenida mientras se acerca la competencia nacional.

“Cuando llegue, estaré emocionada y nerviosa al mismo tiempo. Así que me concentro en aumentar mi energía positiva antes del partido”, dijo Zhang.

Michelle ha estado practicando su tenis compitiendo contra chicos y chicas en su escuela, para asegurarse de que está preparada para cualquier competencia en las Olimpiadas Especiales. “No sé si será mixta o no, así que me preparo para ambas”.

Esta no es la primera competencia de Michelle en las Olimpiadas Especiales.  Aunque admite que no es muy aficionada a la montaña, pero que le gusta esquiar, Michelle ya ganó anteriormente medallas de oro en slalom en las Olimpiadas Especiales regionales de 2017 y 2018.  En marzo de 2022 recibió otro galardón especial al ser nombrada atleta del mes de las Olimpiadas Especiales de Colorado.

En camino a los juegos de 2022, Michelle dice: “Me siento segura y estoy agradecida a mis maestros y entrenadores que me han apoyado. En realidad no tengo nostalgia, me gusta viajar, así que estoy lista para simplemente disfrutar del evento”.

Leigh Shafer se graduó de la Escuela Preparatoria Centaurus (2018) donde nadó en el equipo de natación de los Warriors durante tres años y fue miembro del equipo de natación Lafayette Seals durante tres veranos.  

Después de graduarse de la escuela preparatoria, Leigh comenzó a nadar para el equipo local de las Olimpiadas Especiales, Boulder EXPAND, donde ganó varias medallas de competencia.  En el encuentro estatal de 2019 en Grand Junction, Leigh ganó tres medallas de oro y lideró a su equipo como la primera atleta en entrar al estadio durante la ceremonia de apertura.

Como parte de su preparación para los Juegos Olímpicos nacionales, Leigh, junto con Michelle, asistió al campamento de entrenamiento del equipo de las Olimpiadas Especiales de Colorado en la Academia de la Fuerza Aérea en Colorado Springs en abril.

“Me gusta mucho nadar; ver a mis amigos del equipo”, dijo Leigh. “Me gustó conocer a los otros atletas en el campamento de entrenamiento”.

Como una de las cuatro nadadoras del equipo de Colorado, Leigh competirá en los 50 metros mariposa, los 50 metros libres y en el relevo de medley, donde suele nadar la etapa de mariposa de la carrera.

La prueba de estilo libre es su favorita: “En el estilo libre me gusta mostrar mi velocidad delante de los chicos”, dice con una sonrisa.  Antes de una gran carrera se concentra en “nadar rápido y ser un demonio de la velocidad” y cuando la carrera termina se siente “muerta de cansancio y orgullosa”.

Lo mejor de las Olimpiadas Especiales es estar con los amigos, estar con mis padres y la emoción”, dice Leigh.  Me digo a mí misma que me mantenga en la pista, que no me distraiga y también que me sienta orgullosa y que vaya a divertirme”.

Tanto Leigh como Michelle coinciden en que uno de los momentos más destacados del viaje será sin duda la visita de todos los atletas a Walt Disney World.

“La primera vez que fui a Disney fue hace unos 10 años, cuando era pequeña”, dijo Michelle. “Me emociona ver cómo ha cambiado y especialmente me da ilusión ir al Magic Kingdom; me gusta ver a los personajes”.

Leigh también ha visitado Disney antes y dice que su atracción favorita es “It's a Small World After All”. Tiene planeado llevar puestas las orejas de Mickey Mouse con la bandera de Colorado que le regalaron en la fiesta de despedida del equipo de Colorado para mostrar su orgullo estatal.
