On Wednesday, October 11, the Boulder Valley School District will be pulling all of its schools together, under one roof, for the BVSD Showcase.

“I'm really excited to be able to invite the whole community in to see the amazing offerings that we have at each and every school,” said BVSD Deputy Superintendent Lora de la Cruz. “Every school offers a variety of areas of focus, programming, activities, extracurricular opportunities. We want our community to be able to take a peek at it all.”

This is the first time BVSD has held an event like this before the open enrollment season, which begins on November 1. 

BVSD is the Place to Be Showcase

When: Wednesday, October 11, 2023, 5 - 8 p.m.

Where: CU Events Center, 950 Regent Drive in Boulder

What: Representatives from all 56 schools, as well as Enrollment, Food Services, Transportation, Sustainability, Gifted and Talented and Special Education departments to share about services and answer questions

By holding the Showcase at the CU Events Center, the district will be able to have booths for each school, as well as many of the departments that serve students and families. 

The goal is to make it easy for parents to learn more about the district, specific schools and to ask any questions they may have, prior to solidifying the decision to stay at their neighborhood school or putting in an open enrollment application.

“This will be a one stop shop for parents,” explained Manhattan Middle School of Arts and Academics Principal Kristen Lewis. “They can go to as many schools as they want.”

This is her second year leading a middle school and she has seen the lengths that families will go to in order to make a good choice for their child who is transitioning up from fifth grade.

“The Showcase will allow families to visit more than one school in one night, rather than attending many different open enrollment events at each individual school over multiple days,” Lewis said. “That could be extremely helpful if they are traveling far.”

Schools, of course, will still provide prospective students and parents with tours of their buildings and other opportunities. In fact, here is the page that those opportunities will be listed as we get closer to open enrollment season.

“It is a magical moment and experience when families are walking through schools, peeking into classrooms and interacting with teachers and staff. It is important that students can picture themselves in the school,” explained de la Cruz. 

While the Showcase doesn’t replace those in-person experiences, Lewis says it can help parents narrow down the choices.

“Many of us are parents, so we understand how busy things are – all of the time. The Showcase will give them an opportunity to easily see what everyone has to offer, so that they can have a more pinpointed experience when it comes to the open enrollment nights or daytime events that they want to attend,” Lewis said. 

Her advice to parents?

“I would come prepared with the top three questions that I might have for different schools, as well as some thoughts about what matters most to my family. Whether that is the school’s culture, bullying prevention efforts, support for emerging bilinguals, etc. Think ahead about what your students’ needs might be and what your family wants. I also think it's really important to bring, if possible, their child who is going to be attending because student voice is so important in this choice. This gives their child the ability to say, ‘hey, mom or dad, I really liked these top three schools.’ Then if they can attend the open enrollment events at the specific schools with their parents, that is great. Truly, they are the most important people when it comes to choosing a school.” 

Assistant Superintendent of School Leadership Robbyn Fernandez says every student and every family is different.

“For some families, it's a greater priority for their children to attend their neighborhood school so that their children's friends may live on the same block, play on the same soccer team, shop at the same supermarket, etc. For other families, specific programming is the priority like dual language, IB (International Baccalaureate) or STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math). It really depends on a family's values and what it is they're looking for to meet both the academic and the social emotional needs of their children. In BVSD, we try to do our very best to provide a wide variety of opportunities to meet student and family needs.”

Understanding that choosing a school can be difficult, Centaurus High School Principal Dan Ryan says one of his goals is to take some of the pressure off of the families and students.

“I always tell people that there are no bad choices in BVSD. They're all great choices. Not only do we have the best individual schools in the state, but we also have the best district,” Ryan said. “The Showcase will just give us a chance to highlight what we do well as a school and also what we do well as a district.”

La exposición El BVSD es el lugar para ti ofrece un “evento único para los padres” 

El miércoles 11 de octubre, el Distrito Escolar del Valle de Boulder reunirá a todas sus escuelas, bajo un mismo techo, para la exposición del BVSD. 

“Estoy muy emocionada de poder invitar a toda la comunidad a ver las increíbles ofertas que tenemos en todas y cada una de las escuelas”, dijo Lora de la Cruz, superintendente asistente del BVSD. “Cada escuela ofrece una variedad de áreas de enfoque, programación, actividades y oportunidades extracurriculares. Queremos que nuestra comunidad pueda echarle un vistazo a todo”.

Esta es la primera vez que el BVSD realiza un evento como este antes de la temporada de inscripciones abiertas, que comienza el 1 de noviembre.

Al realizar la exposición en el Centro de Eventos de CU, el distrito podrá tener mesas para cada escuela, así como para muchos de los departamentos que atienden a estudiantes y familias. 

El objetivo es facilitar que los padres aprendan más sobre el distrito, las escuelas específicas y hagan cualquier pregunta que puedan tener, antes de solidificar la decisión de permanecer en la escuela de su vecindario o establecer una solicitud de inscripciones abiertas.

“Este será un evento único para los padres”, explicó Kristen Lewis, directora de la Escuela Secundaria de las Artes y Academia Manhattan. "Pueden ir a tantas escuelas como quieran".

Este es su segundo año liderando una escuela secundaria y ha visto hasta dónde pueden llegar las familias para tomar una buena decisión para su hijo que está en transición del quinto grado.

"La exposición permitirá a las familias visitar más de una escuela en una noche, en lugar de asistir a muchos eventos diferentes de inscripciones abiertas en cada escuela individual durante varios días", dijo Lewis. "Eso podría ser de gran ayuda si viajan desde lejos".

Las escuelas, por supuesto, seguirán ofreciendo a los futuros estudiantes y padres recorridos por sus edificios y otras oportunidades. De hecho, aquí está la página donde se enumerarán esas oportunidades a medida que nos acerquemos a la temporada de inscripciones abiertas.

Si bien la exposición no reemplaza esas experiencias en persona, Lewis dice que puede ayudar a los padres a reducir las opciones.

“Muchos de nosotros somos padres, por lo que entendemos lo ocupados que están las cosas todo el tiempo. La exposición les dará la oportunidad de ver fácilmente lo que todos tienen para ofrecer, para que puedan tener una experiencia más precisa cuando se trata de eventos nocturnos o diurnos de inscripciones abiertas a los que quieran asistir”, dijo Lewis. 

¿Su consejo para los padres?

“Venir preparados con las tres preguntas principales que podrían tener para diferentes escuelas, así como algunas ideas sobre lo que más le importa a su familia. Ya sea la cultura de la escuela, los esfuerzos de prevención del acoso o intimidación escolar (conocido como bullying), el apoyo a los estudiantes bilingües emergentes, etc. Piense con anticipación cuáles podrían ser las necesidades de sus estudiantes y lo que quiere su familia. También creo que es muy importante traer, si es posible, al hijo que asistirá porque la voz de los estudiantes es muy importante en esta elección. Esto le da a su hijo la capacidad de decir: "Oye, mamá o papá, realmente me gustaron estas tres mejores escuelas". Entonces, si pueden asistir a los eventos de inscripciones abiertas en las escuelas específicas con sus padres, sería fantástico. La verdad es que son las personas más importantes a la hora de elegir la escuela”. 

Robbyn Fernandez, superintendente asistente de Liderazgo escolar, dice que cada estudiante y cada familia es diferente.

“Para algunas familias, es una prioridad mayor que sus hijos asistan a la escuela de su barrio para que los amigos de sus hijos vivan en la misma cuadra, jueguen en el mismo equipo de fútbol, compren en el mismo supermercado, etc. Para otras familias, la programación específica es la prioridad como lenguaje dual, IB (Bachillerato Internacional) o STEM (Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas). Realmente depende de los valores de la familia y de lo que buscan para satisfacer las necesidades académicas y socioemocionales de sus hijos. En el BVSD, intentamos hacer nuestro mejor esfuerzo para brindar una amplia variedad de oportunidades para satisfacer las necesidades de los estudiantes y las familias”.

Al comprender que elegir una escuela puede ser difícil, el director de la Escuela Preparatoria Centaurus, Dan Ryan, dice que uno de sus objetivos es aliviar parte de la presión de las familias y los estudiantes.

“Siempre le digo a la gente que no hay malas decisiones en el BVSD. Todas son excelentes opciones. No sólo tenemos las mejores escuelas individuales del estado, sino que también tenemos el mejor distrito”, dijo Ryan. "La exposición simplemente nos dará la oportunidad de resaltar lo que hacemos bien como escuela y también lo que hacemos bien como distrito".
