BVSD launching work to update the Sustainability Management System

Earlier this month, dozens of district partners and community sustainability stakeholders joined Boulder Valley School District staff for a sustainability summit to launch our community engagement work to update our Sustainability Management System (SMS).

BVSD has been working with the Green Schools National Network (GSNN) to gather data to assess progress toward the goals on our current SMS and develop a plan to update it for the next five years. In the coming weeks, GSNN and BVSD will engage with focus groups to identify goals and opportunities for the District's next five-year SMS Action Plan. In June, staff will share the updated SMS Action Plan with the board, along with a five-year progress report.

The SMS has guided the District’s work around sustainability for the past 10 years and been integral in the progress the District has made toward becoming a leader in environmental sustainability and creating healthy learning environments while providing students skills to address systemic challenges.   

GSNN brings deep experience to the table in their work with schools and districts across the country. These schools are leveraging sustainability to drive innovation that: Decreases operational costs and ecological footprint; improves the health and well-being of all who work, learn and play in these schools; and closes the achievement gap while graduating students who have foundational  knowledge and skills to co-create a sustainable future.

El BVSD planea optimizar sus Sistema de Gestión de Sostenibilidad

A comienzos de este mes un gran número de socios del distrito y partes interesadas en la sostenibilidad en nuestra comunidad se reunieron con el Distrito Escolar del Valle de Boulder durante una cumbre de sostenibilidad para dar inicio al trabajo comunitario colaborativo para actualizar nuestro Sistema de Gestión de Sostenibilidad (SMS, por sus siglas en inglés).

El BVSD está trabajando con la Red Nacional de Escuelas Ecológicas (GSNN, por sus siglas en inglés) para reunir datos a fin de analizar el progreso del SMS actual hacia cumplir con nuestras metas y desarrollar un plan para actualizarlo a lo largo de los siguientes cinco años. Durante las próximas semanas la GSNN y el BVSD trabajarán con grupos de enfoque para identificar metas y oportunidades durante los próximos cinco años para un Plan de Acción del SMS del Distrito. En junio el personal presentará el nuevo Plan de Acción del SMS al Consejo de Educación, junto con un reporte sobre el progreso de cinco años.

El SMS ha dirigido el trabajo de sostenibilidad del Distrito durante los últimos 10 años y ha formado una parte esencial del progreso del Distrito hacia convertirse en un líder de sostenibilidad ambiental y crear ambientes saludables de aprendizaje dentro de los cuales los estudiantes adquieren las destrezas que necesitan para abordar desafíos sistémicos.  

La GSNN tiene una abundancia de experiencia trabajando con escuelas y distritos a nivel nacional. Estas escuelas hacen uso de la sostenibilidad para impulsar innovaciones que logran lo siguiente: Disminuir gastos operativos e impactos ambientales; mejorar la salud y el bienestar de todos los que trabajan, aprenden y juegan en las escuelas; y cerrar la brecha en el desempeño y graduar a estudiantes que hayan adquirido conocimientos fundamentales y destrezas para colaborar y crear un futuro sostenible.
