BVSD schools to reopen Wednesday, following Marshall Fires

Thanks to the diligent work of our emergency management partners and utility companies, all Boulder Valley School District schools will reopen on Wednesday, January 5, as planned. This is incredibly important knowing that schools – both in the area of the fire and outside – can serve a very important role of supporting students and their families following this large tragedy.

Before we provide an update, I would like to once again pause to recognize the magnitude of this situation for our community. Our hearts are with those who are waiting for word regarding their missing family members, as well as the 991 families who got confirmation that their homes have been destroyed on Saturday. We cannot fully comprehend what you are going through, but know that we are standing with you during this difficult time.

We remain all together for all of our students – and I’m pleased to see our community once again band together to weather yet another tragedy.


BVSD School Update
Today we received an update from the Boulder Office of Emergency Management (Boulder OEM), as well as BVSD maintenance teams, who have been working to assess all of our facilities in the area.

Our maintenance crews have confirmed that none of our buildings were damaged by the flames, and they are in the process of “air scrubbing” buildings that were impacted by smoke. Additionally, Xcel Energy has restored electricity to all of our buildings, and we are told that natural gas should be back on by Tuesday.

The boil water order is expected to remain in effect in Louisville and Superior for some time, but we are bringing in bottled water and our Food Services team will be able to continue to serve students.

The newly fallen snow is making it tough to fully assess our school grounds. At this point it does not appear that our playgrounds and other facilities were impacted, but there is likely some debris that is under the blanket of powder and we will be working to address it when the snow melts.

As we mentioned, we also have a number of staff members who work at schools across the district who have been impacted by the fire. We are working to provide them and families directly impacted with the flexibility they need during this difficult time and will address staffing impacts by solidifying additional support through substitute teachers and classroom monitors. Temporarily we have increased our substitute rate to $175 Monday-Thursday and $200 on Fridays. With all of this information, we are now confident that we will be able to resume classes on Wednesday, as planned. 


Transportation impacts & opportunities to support 
One of the many challenges facing BVSD families impacted by the Marshall Fire will be transportation. 

In addition to living in different locations, we’ve also learned that RTD has temporarily suspended the Dash, 228, and the FlexRide service to Louisville and Superior due to the fire. Check here for RTD service updates.

As a community we can offer support by organizing carpools to help students get to school and activities. BVSD has partnered for the last ten years with the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) to offer carpool networks. DRCOG’s SchoolPool tool is an easy and free way to connect with other families in your community. Each of BVSD’s 53 sites has its own secure network. Please see this letter for instructions on how to sign up for your school’s carpool network and check back frequently as more and more families sign up for the service.


It will be some time until things return back to ‘normal’
I do want to recognize that school may not immediately look the same as it normally has. 

We are encouraging our schools and teachers to put the social-emotional health of our students first and will be working to provide impacted families and staff the additional support and flexibility they need during this crisis. 

We ask that everyone approach the second semester of this school year with empathy and understanding.

We are delaying the release of report cards for one month and expect other impacts as we, together, work through this.

Additionally, we recognize that this situation frightened many of us, including our kids. This tragedy may compound the trauma already experienced due to the other crisis situations we’ve faced over the past year, including the pandemic and the Boulder shooting. Let us all work to support each other and our kids during this difficult time.  

Here are some of the tips provided by the American School Counselor Association:

  • Try and keep routines as normal as possible. Kids gain security from the predictability of routine, including attending school.
  • Limit exposure to television and the news.

  • Be honest with kids and share with them as much information as they are developmentally able to handle.
  • Listen to kids’ fears and concerns.
  • Reassure kids that the world is a good place to be, but that there are people who do bad things.
  • Parents and adults need to first deal with and assess their own responses to crisis and stress.
  • Rebuild and reaffirm attachments and relationships.

Las escuelas del BVSD regresan a clases el miércoles, después del incendio Marshall


Gracias al diligente trabajo de nuestros compañeros en la Oficina de Gestión de Emergencias y las compañías de servicios públicos, todas las escuelas del Distrito Escolar del Valle de Boulder regresarán a clases el miércoles 5 de enero, como previsto. Esto es increíblemente importante, ya que nuestras escuelas —dentro y fuera de la zona del incendio— tendrán un papel muy importante para apoyar a los estudiantes y las familias después de esta enorme tragedia.

Antes de darles más noticias, queremos tomar un momento para reconocer nuevamente la magnitud del efecto que esta situación ha tenido en nuestra comunidad. Mantenemos en nuestros pensamientos a todos aquellos que están aguardando noticias de sus familiares desaparecidos, al igual que las 991 personas que fueron notificadas el sábado de que sus hogares fueron destruidos. Sabemos que el dolor que están sintiendo ahora es inconmensurable, pero queremos asegurarles de que estaremos a su lado durante este tiempo difícil.

Actualización sobre las escuelas del BVSD
Hoy recibimos noticias de la Oficina de Gestión de Emergencias de Boulder (Boulder OEM) y de los equipos de mantenimiento del BVSD, quienes han estado analizando todas nuestras instalaciones en el área del incendio.

Nuestros equipos de mantenimiento confirmaron que ninguno de nuestros edificios sufrieron daño a causa de las llamas, y están en proceso de filtrar el aire en los edificios que tuvieron mucho humo. Impactos en el transporte y oportunidades para ayudar 
Uno de los desafíos que enfrentan las familias del BVSD afectadas por el incendio Marshall es el servicio de transporte. 

Además de estar desplazados, nos hemos enterado de que el RTD ha suspendido temporalmente los autobuses Dash, 228 y el servicio de FlexRide a Louisville y Superior debido al incendio. Refiérase a esta página para la información más reciente sobre los servicios del RTD.

Como comunidad podemos apoyar organizando viajes compartidos en auto para ayudar a los alumnos a llegar a la escuela y a diferentes actividades. Tomará tiempo regresar a la 'normalidad’
Es probable que las clases no sean inmediatamente iguales a como eran antes. 

Alentamos a nuestras escuelas y a los maestros a priorizar la salud socioemocional de nuestros estudiantes y trabajaremos para proporcionarles a las familias y empleados afectados el apoyo y flexibilidad que necesitan durante esta crisis.
