As the school year comes to a close, high school seniors eagerly anticipate the excitement of prom and other end-of-year celebrations. These milestones mark the end of an important chapter in their lives and offer an opportunity to create lasting memories. While these events are a time of celebration, it’s crucial to approach them with safety in mind. As families and students prepare for these memorable moments, it's essential to prioritize well-being, make informed decisions, and have open conversations about safe choices.

Here’s a guide for families and students on how to enjoy prom and end-of-year activities responsibly and safely:

1. Plan ahead

Prom and other senior activities often involve multiple elements, from dressing up to making transportation arrangements. Planning ahead helps ensure that everything runs smoothly and safely.

  • Transportation safety: Prom is a night of celebration, but it can also bring unique challenges when it comes to getting home safely. Make transportation arrangements in advance. Whether you're planning to ride with friends, use a ride-sharing service, or have a parent pick you up, make sure everyone has a clear plan. Never get into a car with someone who has been drinking or using drugs.

  • Staying connected: It's important for families and students to stay in communication before, during, and after the event. Make sure both students and parents know the itinerary for the evening, including the time and place of the event, as well as any after-parties or gatherings.

  • After prom activities: Several BVSD high schools provide after-prom activities to ensure students have a safe and sober experience following the formal dance.

2. Zero tolerance: Making responsible choices

The excitement of prom and end-of-year events can sometimes lead to poor decision-making, especially when it comes to alcohol or drug use. However, making safe and responsible choices is essential for ensuring the safety of everyone involved.

  • Zero tolerance for underage drinking: Remember that underage drinking is not only illegal but also dangerous. It's important to encourage students to commit to staying sober during these celebrations. Parents and guardians should have an open discussion with their teens about the risks of alcohol and drugs.

3. Watch out for peer pressure and stay true to yourself

Prom and other year-end activities often come with strong social pressure. There might be moments where students feel urged to take part in activities or behaviors they are uncomfortable with. It's important to remember that it’s okay to say no.

  • Supportive friend groups: Surround yourself with friends who share your values and understand the importance of staying safe. A solid group of friends can help ensure that everyone makes responsible decisions and keeps each other safe throughout the night.

  • Empower students to speak up: If students feel unsafe or uncomfortable in any situation, they should feel empowered to reach out for help. Whether it's contacting a parent, a school chaperone, or a trusted friend, it's important to have a plan in place to manage potentially uncomfortable or unsafe situations.

4. The importance of open communication

The key to ensuring a safe and enjoyable prom season is communication. It’s essential for parents and students to talk openly and honestly about expectations, boundaries, and safety.

  • Talk About Expectations: Parents should have open conversations with their children about the event's expectations. Discuss rules, curfews, and transportation plans. Make sure your teen knows that they can call or text if they ever feel uncomfortable or need help.

  • Discussing Boundaries: It’s essential for students to understand their personal boundaries and feel confident in expressing them. Parents can help by having discussions about boundaries with their teens and ensuring they feel supported in saying no when faced with peer pressure.

  • Checking in After the Event: After the event, it’s crucial to check in with your teen to ensure they made it home safely and to have an open discussion about the experience. Celebrate the fun moments and use them as an opportunity to reinforce the importance of safe choices.

5. Support mental health and well-being

For many students, prom and the end of the year can be a stressful time. The excitement, the social pressures, and the significant life changes ahead can sometimes lead to anxiety or overwhelm. Make sure your teen feels supported emotionally and mentally during this time.

  • Acknowledge the Pressure: Students may feel stressed about how they look, fitting in, or making sure everything goes perfectly. Remind them that the true purpose of prom is to enjoy themselves and celebrate with friends, not to live up to unrealistic expectations.

  • Focus on Fun, Not Perfection: It's easy to get caught up in the idea of the "perfect night," but the memories made during prom are about fun, laughter, and the people you’re with—not about achieving some Instagram-worthy moment.

These activities are an exciting way to celebrate the end of high school, but they also require careful planning and responsible decision-making. By discussing transportation plans, staying sober, and fostering open communication, families and students can ensure that these celebrations are both enjoyable and safe.
