Community partner provides 13,000+ hot meals to families in response to Marshall Fires

In partnership with BVSD schools and parent volunteers, Conscious Alliance jumped into action to provide hot meals and supplies for students and families

“Part of our mission statement is to support communities in crisis, it just so happens to be our community right now,” says Kathryn Burleson, Program Director of Conscious Alliance. 

The Broomfield-based nonprofit has a mission to provide hunger relief and youth empowerment to communities across the country. 

“Whether it's a long-standing underserved community like the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota or New Orleans after a hurricane, we are intentionally going into underserved communities,” says Burleson.

On the second to last day of 2021, the most destructive fire in Colorado history destroyed more than 1,000 homes, displacing thousands of families - right in Conscious Alliance’s backyard. Its national distribution center was evacuated and eventually spared by the fire.

“On December 31st when we were allowed back in, we decided to look at what we could do to help because our building is still here and we're two miles away from where the fire stopped,” says Peter Hoy, Senior Program Manager for Conscious Alliance. “Our phone was ringing off the hook with calls from food brands and bands that we partner with. So many supporters were calling to say, ‘what can we send? what do you guys need?’”

The Conscious Alliance team had a lot of offers of support and a huge amount of food available but needed to connect to the families most impacted by the fires. That’s where BVSD schools became an integral part of their relief work. Conscious Alliance had some existing relationships with a few schools, but when the fires hit, they connected with even more schools in the fire-impacted area to help connect the impacted families with ready-to-eat meals and other supplies needed for those who had been displaced.

In partnership with Conscious Alliance, a large international nonprofit, World Central Kitchen, flew into town, offering to back more than 90 restaurants who jumped in to supply meals to those in need. Conscious Alliance staff and BVSD parent volunteers delivered those meals to displaced residents along the Front Range –10,000 meals in the first two weeks alone. After that, Conscious Alliance set up meal distribution sites at BVSD schools in the impacted areas.

“Part of the World Central Kitchen program is to also support chefs during the relief process, so we’re not just bringing food, but bringing support to pay the restaurants to create the food,” says Hoy. “The restaurants, they’re not making a ton of money on it, but they're getting some financial support to be able to help us support the community, so it becomes a win, win, win, so it was a no brainer to work with them on it.”

Conscious Alliance handed out hot meals and supplies to families as they picked up their kids from Fireside Elementary, Coal Creek Elementary, Monarch PK-8, and Superior Elementary where students and teachers lost their homes to the fire. In addition to meals, they distributed gift cards and care packages through the We Got This initiative as well as personal hygiene items, air mattresses, and duffle bags. 

“The parents that stop by have been so appreciative and have been looking forward to when Conscious Alliance will be out there,” says Elizabeth Moura, parent of an Aspen Creek student and volunteer with Conscious Alliance. “It makes dinner one less thing they have to worry about that day.”

Distribution of hot meals continued at impacted schools through mid-March in an effort to continue to support families with the long-term impacts of the fires.

“We weren't selective of who was receiving those meals … everyone was able to get it if they wanted to,” says Burleson, “Some people said we should just be feeding people that were displaced or only people who completely lost their home. Our approach has just been more like ‘let's help everybody's nervous system settle down.’ Let them not have to worry about food tonight if you're going to be on the phone with your insurance broker. It's such a unique trauma and situation.”

The Conscious Alliance team provided immediate and lasting support for students and families impacted by the fires and they plan to continue this work, both in this community and across the country.

“The heart and hustle is strong,” says the Conscious Alliance Annual Report about the fire-relief project.  “And we will be here for our neighbors for years to come.”

Un socio comunitario proporciona más de 10,000 comidas a familias en respuesta al Incendio Marshall

En colaboración con las escuelas del BVSD y padres voluntarios, Conscious Alliance se unió para proporcionar comidas preparadas y suministros para estudiantes y familias.

“Parte de nuestra misión es apoyar a las comunidades en crisis, lo que está ocurriendo en nuestra comunidad en este momento”, dice Kathryn Burleson, directora del programa de Conscious Alliance. 

La organización sin fines de lucro establecida en Broomfield tiene la misión de proporcionar ayuda contra el hambre y capacitación de los jóvenes en comunidades en todo el país.

“Ya sea una comunidad desatendida por mucho tiempo como la reserva Pine Ridge en el Dakota del Sur o Nueva Orleans después del huracán, estamos visitando a las comunidades desatendidas con un propósito”, dice Burleson.

Dos días antes del fin de año de 2021, el incendio más destructivo en la historia de Colorado destruyó más de 1,000 hogares, desplazando a miles de familias - justo en el vecindario de Conscious Alliance. Su centro de distribución nacional fue evacuado y eventualmente se salvó del fuego.

“El 31 de diciembre, cuando se nos permitió regresar, decidimos pensar en lo que podíamos hacer para ayudar porque si bien nuestro edificio sigue en pie, nos encontramos a dos millas del sitio donde el fuego se detuvo”, dice Peter Hoy, administrador del programa de Conscious Alliance. “Nuestro teléfono estaba sonando sin parar con llamadas de compañías de marcas de comida y bandas con las que colaboramos.  Muchas personas ofreciendo su apoyo estaban llamando para decir, ‘¿qué podemos enviar? ¿qué necesitan?’”

El equipo de Conscious Alliance tuvo muchas ofertas de apoyo y una gran cantidad de comida disponible, pero necesitaban conectarse con las familias más afectadas por el incendio. Ahí es donde las escuelas del BVSD se convirtieron en una parte integral del trabajo de ayuda. Conscious Alliance ya tenía relaciones establecidas con algunas escuelas, pero cuando sucedieron los incendios, ellos se conectaron con aún más escuelas en el área afectada por el incendio para ayudarlos a conectar a las familias afectadas con comidas preparadas y otros suministros necesarios para aquellos que habían sido desplazados.

En colaboración con Conscious Alliance, una gran organización sin fines de lucro, World Central Kitchen, voló hasta el área afectada, ofreciendo apoyar a más de 90 restaurantes que se lanzaron a proporcionar comida preparada para las personas necesitadas. El personal de Conscious Alliance y los padres voluntarios del BVSD entregaron esas comidas a los residentes desplazados en toda la cordillera - 10,000 comidas solo en las primeras dos semanas.  Después de eso, Conscious Alliance estableció sitios de distribución de comidas en las escuelas del BVSD en las áreas afectadas.

“Parte del programa de World Central Kitchen es también apoyar a los chefs durante el proceso de ayuda, así que no solo estamos proporcionando comida, sino apoyo para pagarle a los restaurantes para que preparen comida”, dice Hoy.  “Los restaurantes no están ganando mucho dinero por esto, pero están recibiendo algo de apoyo financiero para poder ayudarnos a apoyar a la comunidad, así que todos salimos beneficiados, no tuvimos qué pensar mucho para trabajar con ellos en esto”.

Conscious Alliance entregó comidas preparadas y suministros a las familias mientras recogían a sus niños en la Primaria Fireside, la Primaria Coal Creek, Monarch PK-8 y la Primaria Superior, donde los estudiantes y los maestros perdieron sus hogares en el fuego.  Además de las comidas, ellos distribuyeron tarjetas de regalo y paquetes de cuidado a través de la iniciativa We Got This, así como artículos de aseo personal, colchones inflables y sacos de viaje para transportar sus artículos.

“Los padres que pasaron por aquí han estado muy agradecidos y esperan la próxima vez que Conscious Alliance esté por aquí”,  dice Elizabeth Moura, madre de un estudiante de Aspen Creek y voluntaria con Conscious Alliance. “Hace que la comida sea una cosa menos en la que tienen que preocuparse durante el día”.

La distribución de comidas preparadas continuó en las escuelas afectadas hasta mediados de marzo como un esfuerzo para continuar apoyando a las familias afectadas a largo plazo por los incendios.

“No fuimos selectivos sobre quién estaba recibiendo esas comidas... Todos podían recibirlas si así lo deseaban”, dice Burleson. “Algunas personas dijeron que solo deberíamos alimentar a aquellos que fueron desplazados o a las personas que habían perdido completamente sus hogares. Nuestra postura ha sido ‘vamos a mantener el sistema nervioso de todos tranquilo’.  Vamos a ayudarlos a que no se preocupen por la cena de esta noche, si van a tener que estar en una llamada telefónica con su agente de seguros.  Son un trauma y una situación muy únicos”.

El equipo de Conscious Alliance proporcionó apoyo inmediato y prolongado para los estudiantes y las familias afectadas por los incendios y planean continuar este trabajo, tanto en esta comunidad como en todo el país. 

“El corazón y el trabajo duro son fuertes”, dice el reporte anual de Conscious Alliance acerca del proyecto de ayuda contra el incendio.   “Y aquí estaremos para nuestros vecinos por muchos años más”.
