Former Foothill Elementary teacher returns to BVSD with famous sister

While Cara Mentzel’s sister, Idina Menzel (yes, they spell their last names differently), is known for her roles on stage and screen, it was Cara who was treated like a superstar when she returned to Foothill Elementary in Boulder, Colorado earlier this month.

The educator, turned author, came back to the school where she taught for nearly 15 years to share her and her sister’s new children’s book, “Loud Mouse”. Students and staff at the school welcomed her back warmly.

“I love being in front of kids and I've missed it,” Mentzel said.

The sisters read the book to students gathered in the school’s library and shared that it was based on their childhood.

In the book, Dee the mouse loves to sing, but when she sings for her class something strange happens: she gets bigger and her voice gets louder and louder until it is too loud and she is afraid to sing again--but her little sister, Cara Lee, gives her the confidence to share her talent with everybody.

“Those are our real names in real life. D is my nickname,” Menzel said. 

“And I'm the little sister, Cara Lee,” Mentzel added.

Both “Loud Mouse” and Cara Mentzel’s debut memoir, “Voice Lessons: A Sister’s Story”, chronicle what it was like for the sisters growing up, as Menzel found her voice, which would eventually land her in leading roles in Disney's FROZEN and the Tony Award-winning WICKED.

“It's really about vulnerability,” Mentzel said. “Being your best self makes you vulnerable, that's okay.”

“When you're little like me and you have a big voice at an early age, you know there's something special, but you're not really sure when it's okay to share it and let it out there,” Menzel added.

The sisters are already planning a sequel that will focus on what it is like to be the sister who is in the shadow.

“It's called Proud Mouse,” Mentzel shared. “It is focused more on the younger sister and how it feels to live in the presence of a really annoying older sister that sucks up all the air in the room.”

The sisters grew up in the New Jersey/New York area. Back then, of course, they had the same last name – Mentzel.

Idina Menzel went off to New York University and found her way to Broadway. Along the way she changed her last name, thinking it would be easier for folks to pronounce, but she says they still regularly say it wrong.

Meanwhile, Cara Mentzel was drawn to Colorado for college. She attended the University of Colorado Boulder and stayed for her teaching career. She left the Boulder Valley School District during the pandemic, choosing to briefly move out to Los Angeles to help teach her and her sister’s kids during the lockdown. The change up, provided her an opportunity to focus on her love for writing.

While Menzel, who recently learned that she will be starting in Frozen 3, had to return back to the big city, Mentzel is visiting several schools in BVSD and other neighboring districts.

Una antigua maestra de la Escuela Primaria Foothill regresa al BVSD con su famosa hermana

Aunque la hermana de Cara Mentzel, Idina Menzel (sí, escriben su apellido de manera diferente), es famosa por sus papeles en el escenario y la pantalla, fue Cara la que recibió una acogida propia de una estrella cuando, este mes, regresó a la Escuela Primaria Foothill de Boulder, Colorado.

La maestra, convertida en escritora, regresó a la escuela donde enseñó durante casi 15 años para presentar el nuevo libro infantil de ella y su hermana: “Loud Mouse”. Los estudiantes y el personal de la escuela le brindaron una calurosa bienvenida.

“Me encanta tener niños delante y lo he echado de menos”, comentó Mentzel.

Las hermanas leyeron el libro a los estudiantes, que se reunieron en la biblioteca de la escuela, y les contaron que estaba basado en su infancia.

En el libro, a la ratoncita Dee le encanta cantar, pero cuando canta para los niños de su clase, pasa algo muy raro: se hace más y más grande, y su voz se vuelve cada vez más alta, hasta que es demasiado alta y le da miedo de cantar otra vez. Pero su hermana pequeña, Cara Lee, le transmite la confianza que necesita para compartir su talento con todos los demás.

“Esos son nuestros verdaderos nombres en la vida real. D es mi apelativo cariñoso”, comentó Menzel. 

“Y yo soy la hermana pequeña, Cara Lee”, añadió Mentzel.

Tanto “Loud Mouse” como el debut autobiográfico de Cara Mentzel, “Voice Lessons: A Sister’s Story”, cuenta cómo fue crecer para las hermanas mientras Menzel descubría su voz, la cual, en última instancia, la ha hecho protagonista en FROZEN de Disney y WICKED, ganadora del Premio Tony.

“Trata, en realidad, de la vulnerabilidad”, comentó Mentzel. “Alcanzar tu máximo potencial te hace vulnerable, pero no pasa nada”.

“Cuando eres pequeña y tienes una gran voz a una edad temprana, eres consciente de que tienes algo especial, pero no estás segura de cuándo está bien compartirlo y presentarlo”, añadió Mentzel. 

Las hermanas ya están planeando una segunda parte en la que se centrarán en lo que significa ser la hermana en la sombra.

“Se llama Proud Mouse”, contó Mentzel. “Se enfoca en la hermana pequeña, y en cómo es vivir en la presencia de una hermana mayor muy pesada que se queda con todo el aire en la habitación”. 

A Idina le encantan las luces brillantes de Nueva York y Los Ángeles. En Colorado, es donde Cara se siente en casa.  
Las hermanas crecieron en el área de Nueva Jersey/Nueva York. En aquel entonces, por supuesto, ambas tenían el mismo apellido: Mentzel.

Idina Menzel ingresó en la Universidad de Nueva York y logró encontrar su lugar en Broadway. Por el camino, se cambió el apellido, pensando que sería más fácil de pronunciar, pero dice que la gente sigue diciéndolo mal a menudo.

Mientras tanto, Cara Mentzel se marchó a Colorado para estudiar en la universidad. Ingresó en la Universidad de Colorado - Boulder y estudió para ser maestra. Dejó el Distrito Escolar del Valle de Boulder durante la pandemia, y decidió mudarse brevemente a Los Ángeles para dar clase a sus hijos y los de su hermana durante el confinamiento. El cambio le proporcionó una oportunidad para centrarse en su amor por la escritura.

Mientras Menzel, que hace poco se enteró de que va a volver a ser protagonista en Frozen 3, ha tenido que regresar a la gran ciudad, Mentzel está visitando varias escuelas en el BVSD y otros distritos del alrededor.
