Getting a Head Start on Late-Start Mornings

Randy Barber

In July, Meadowlark School staff decided that while they'd be spending Wednesday mornings working on their professional development, they wanted their students to have an opportunity to better themselves as well. They tapped into BVSD Lifelong Learning's (LLL) wide array of before-school enrichment classes — all held within the welcoming walls of Meadowlark.

On the first day of school, the "Lifelong Learners" were the first ones to enter the school for their extracurricular classes. 74 students eagerly began their school day by engaging in Spanish, LEGO motorized building, cooking and robotics enrichment classes.

"Wouldn't we all like to start our day with something fun or with a new and exciting activity with our peers?" Assistant Principal Sennen Knauer pondered. "Our students are relaxed, happy and ready for a day of learning at Meadowlark after they leave their LLL classes."

Kids and Teens LLL Programmer Angie Lauridsen couldn’t believe how the energy of the enrichment classes carried over into the frenzy of the first bell of the 2018-19 school year. “That was the best first day of school ever! Meadowlark rocks.”

Aspen Creek PK-8 and Monarch PK-8 also host Lifelong Learning late-start enrichment classes. Three six-week sessions run August 15 - September 19, September 26 - October 31, and November 7 - December 19. Class times are 8:30-9:25 a.m. For more information on late start classes or after-school classes at 24 BVSD schools, visit www.BVSD.org/LLL or call 720-561-5968.
