Built in the 1950s, the building where New Vista High School currently resides is filled with plenty of horrors.

The BVSD Critical Needs Plan documents a list of concerns caused by the substantial deterioration of the building’s condition. While a lot of updates are needed for the old facility that was once Baseline Middle School, from cracks in the foundation, which pose a risk to the school’s structural integrity, to a roof that leaks profusely during heavy downpours – there is one concern that was left out of the report.

According to several employees, once everyone has gone home for the day, occasionally something paranormal begins to cause mischief.

‘There’s a lot of crazy things going on there,’ said IT Customer Service Technician Connie Sanderson. 

She often works late into the night in the New Vista Study Center and has had several experiences with something that she can’t see.

“Things brush past me. You can hear the sounds of someone walking. It almost sounds like rustling, like clothing moving,” Sanderson said. “It has never touched me, but it brushes past me. It happens all the time.”

Sanderson says she doesn’t fright easily or jump to conclusions. “Like I said, I need something to happen more than once for it to catch my attention, because sometimes things just happen.” 

She says that she has had several encounters with a spirit of some kind. Honestly, she’s a pretty cool customer when it comes to facing a possible ghost.

“The first time I experienced something, I went out in the middle of the study center and I said, ‘I think it's cool that you're here. Just don't jump out and scare me,’” Sanderson said. 

For the most part, she’s gotten along okay with the ghoul. Most of the time it brushes by or maybe turns off the lights or plays havoc on her computers. There was, however, one night when she decided to play some music and found out that the spirit isn’t much of a fan of today’s music.

“I was playing Motown. After a few hours of it, I got tired of it, so I changed the music to something more modern,” Sanderson recalled. “Immediately it sounded like someone was slamming something on the floor, in the hallway beyond those double doors. It sounded like if someone had a big boulder and they were slamming it on the floor in the hallway.”

“It was very loud and it kept getting louder, and so finally I said, ‘okay, hold on. Give me a minute, and I will change it back.’ Once I changed it back, it stopped,’” she added. “I tried to keep working and tried not to think about it, and eventually it just creeped me out so much that I had to leave.”

She isn’t the only one who has had an encounter. New Vista Custodian Ana Martinez Tapia has had several similar experiences.

Just this week, she was cleaning a bathroom upstairs when something brushed by her. 

“Somebody went to the door, fast. I was thinking, ‘Oh my God. Somebody is here. Somebody here.’ I looked around because it felt like somebody else was here, but there was nothing else here,” Martinez said. 

Another staff member reported hearing a girl crying in the bathroom, but after checking no one was there.

No one is quite sure of who the ghost might be. To our knowledge, no one has ever died at the old school.

Now, with the prospect that new funding could bring a New Vista building, Sanderson wonders if the ghosts will move along with the staff and students.

“I would like to think that they would move with the new building because it's not that far, but I don't know,” Sanderson said. “If a building does happen, maybe there needs to be some ceremony to move them over. I hope to keep our ghost.”

New Vista se llena de espanto por la noche

El edificio donde actualmente se encuentra la Escuela Preparatoria New Vista, el cual se construyó en la década de 1950, está lleno de terror. El Plan de Necesidades Críticas del BVSD documenta un número de inquietudes causadas por el deterioro considerable de la condición del edificio. A pesar de que se necesitan hacer muchas renovaciones en la antigua instalación que anteriormente fue la Escuela Secundaria Baseline, desde grietas en los cimientos que ponen en riesgo la integridad estructural de la escuela, hasta un techo que gotea abundantemente durante las fuertes lluvias, existe una preocupación que no se incluyó en el informe. 

Según varios empleados, una vez que todos se van a casa al fin del día, de vez en cuando algo paranormal empieza a hacer travesuras. 

“Hay muchas cosas locas que están sucediendo aquí”, dijo la técnica de atención al cliente en informática, Connie Anderson. 

A menudo trabaja hasta las altas horas de la noche en el Centro de Estudios de New Vista, y ya ha tenido varias vivencias con algo que no puede ver. 

“Las cosas me pasan rozando. Se puede escuchar el sonido de alguien que camina. Casi suena como un crujido, como cuando la ropa se mueve”, dijo Sanderson. “Jamás me ha tocado, pero me roza al pasar. Sucede todo el tiempo”. 

Sanderson dice que no se asusta fácilmente o saca conclusiones precipitadas. “Como dije, necesito que algo suceda más de una vez para que me llame la atención, porque algunas cosas simplemente pasan”.

Ella dice que ha tenido varios encuentros con algún tipo de espíritu. Honestamente, es una persona muy tranquila a la hora de enfrentarse a un posible fantasma. 

“La primera ocasión que viví algo, fui al medio del centro de estudios y dije, ‘me parece genial que estés aquí. Solo no saltes y me asustes”, dijo Sanderson. 

Por lo general, ella se ha llevado bien con el fantasma. La mayor parte del tiempo pasa rozando o quizás apaga las luces o causa caos en sus computadoras. Aunque hubo una noche que decidió tocar música y descubrió que al espíritu no le gusta mucho la música actual. 

“Estaba tocando Motown. Después de unas horas de tocar, me cansé de escucharlo, y por lo tanto, cambié la música a algo más moderno”, recordó Sanderson. “Inmediatamente se escuchó como si alguien estuviera golpeando algo en el suelo, en el pasillo más allá de esas puertas dobles. Se escuchaba como si alguien tuviera una piedra grande y la estuviera golpeando en el piso del pasillo”. 

“El ruido era muy fuerte y cada vez era más fuerte, y finalmente dije, ‘bueno, espera. Dame un minuto, y la volveré a cambiar’. Una vez que la cambié, el ruido se detuvo”, añadió ella. “Traté de continuar trabajando y traté de no pensar en eso, y eventualmente me aterrorizó tanto que me tuve que ir”.

Ella no es la única que ha tenido un encuentro. La conserje de New Vista, Ana Martínez Tapia ha tenido varias vivencias similares.

Justo esta semana, ella estaba limpiando el baño en el piso de arriba cuando algo la rozó. 

“Alguien se dirigió a la puerta, rápido. Estaba pensando, ‘Ay dios mío. Alguien está aquí. Alguien está aquí’ Miré alrededor porque sentía que alguien más estaba aquí, pero no había nada más aquí”, dijo Martínez.

Otro empleado contó haber escuchado a una niña llorar en el baño, pero después de revisar no había nadie ahí. 

Nadie está seguro de quién pueda ser el fantasma. Que nosotros sepamos, nadie ha muerto en la antigua escuela. 

Ahora, con la perspectiva que el nuevo financiamiento podría permitir la construcción de un edificio de New Vista, Sanderson se pregunta si los fantasmas se mudarán junto con el personal y los estudiantes. 

“Quisiera pensar que ellos se mudarían al nuevo edificio porque no está muy lejos, pero no sé”, dijo Sanderson. “Si la construcción del edificio sí se lleva a cabo, quizás necesita haber una ceremonia para trasladarlos. Espero quedarme con nuestro fantasma”.
