Planned national protest impacting BVSD school operations tomorrow
Randy Barber

The Boulder Valley School District is expecting a staffing shortage tomorrow, related to the planned National Shutdown protest. Organizers are encouraging people to refrain from going to work, school or shopping.

Today, without warning, nearly a quarter of our teachers submitted leave for tomorrow. As a result, our ability to operate school normally tomorrow will be impacted at many of our schools.

While we learned about the protest earlier this week, we did not anticipate this impact, with both the Colorado Education Association and the Boulder Valley Education Association communicating to teachers this week that tomorrow is not an authorized day of action.

We understand the burden that a school closure places on our families, especially with such short notice for our parents/guardians that must go to work.

Our district staff worked throughout today and this evening on a plan to avoid a closure, our apologies for the late message.

Ultimately, our buildings will remain open tomorrow, Friday, January 30

  • Our school leaders, teachers in attendance, and support staff will be working to provide supervised activities throughout the day
  • Breakfast and lunch will be served, as normal
  • SAC will operate before and after school, as normal
  • Schools will individually make decisions on after school athletics and activities
  • As always, we respect the decisions of our families. If you’d like to keep your children home tomorrow, we will excuse all absences

We believe deeply in our mission of educating and supporting children and regret the impact of this event on our students and families.
