As the end of the legislative session approaches, the Boulder Valley School District is anticipating news from the State Capitol regarding Governor Jared Polis’ proposal to bring Full Day Kindergarten to Colorado. Funding is currently in the School Finance Act, being considered by lawmakers.

Until now, full-day kindergarten has only been available at 10 BVSD schools (current and previous  Title I schools), as part of the district’s equity efforts. Expanding this opportunity to all of our kindergarten students will help every student reach their full potential. That is why BVSD has been working ahead, preparing for the possibility, ensuring all of our schools are ready to welcome full-day kindergarten this Fall if given the green light.

Thanks to our community’s support of the 2014 Bond, all of BVSD’s elementary schools will have the capacity to expand to full-day kindergarten programming by the end of this summer. Additionally, we have developed a plan to ensure that we have high-quality teachers and staff in place and are ready for this opportunity.

If the legislature approves full-day kindergarten, BVSD will offer full-day programming to all of its students for the 2019-20 School Year.   In that scenario, if a parent wishes to only have a student in school half day, they will attend the portion of the day when the core curriculum, including literacy, is taught.

Of course, until funding is in place, BVSD is proceeding with enrollment for its current half-day kindergarten and kindergarten enrichment programs, as normal.

While you can enroll anytime between now and the beginning of school, now is the perfect time because it helps our schools get a better idea of who will be joining the kindergarten classrooms in August.
