Summer Food Service Program Provides Free Meals

Providing nutrition to students is the School Food Project’s proverbial bread and butter. The department serves nearly half a million meals during the school year, but what about during the summer? For years, the group has run the Summer Food Service Program, a summer feeding program sponsored by the USDA with the goal of providing free meals so no child goes hungry during the summertime.

This year, BVSD and the City of Lafayette are joining forces to host an open site at LaMont Does Park. The park will be the district's first community-based open feeding site.

(The LaMont Does Park shelter where free summer meals will be served to anyone under 18.)

Meals are provided to students at all BVSD Summer Learning facilities, including at certain designated “open sites.” At these open sites anyone under the age of 18, regardless of their enrollment in BVSD or Summer Learning programs, can receive a meal for free.

Although BVSD has hosted open sites for many summers, participant numbers have been low among those children not enrolled in summer school.

“Establishing the LaMont Does open feeding site will alleviate barriers that families might feel to entering a school building, as well as expanding the overall access of the program to the general community,” explains Chef Ann Cooper, Director of BVSD Food Services. “Kids deserve healthy, delicious food every day, and we’re excited to pilot this additional opportunity for kids to receive free meals this summer.”
