Weeds or Wish-makers? Dandelions in BVSD lawns mean they are safe for kids

Dandelions are a common sight in the lawns around BVSD schools in warmer months. These bright yellow harbingers of summer also are a sign of BVSD’s commitment to creating healthy environments inside and outside our schools. More than a decade ago, BVSD stopped using herbicides on lawns to reduce toxins and protect air quality in and around schools. This is consistent with more recent efforts to use non-toxic products and materials in our buildings as outlined in the Sustainability Management System.

“BVSD is committed to sustainability and healthy learning environments,” said BVSD sustainability coordinator Ghita Carroll. “Minimizing pesticide and herbicide use and practicing best integrated pest management methods is part of this commitment. Dandelions this year are prolific but as a parent, and the District Sustainability Coordinator, I appreciate knowing BVSD fields are healthy and safe spaces for playing.”

Grassy areas are mown regularly to try to keep weeds down. Staff also take extra steps such as top dressing with compost, overseeding, and extra mowing to encourage healthy turf grass growth on athletic fields. However, dandelions are amazingly productive and easily go from flower to seed between mowings.

When you see dandelions in the grass, know that BVSD is doing what it can to make district lawns safe and healthy places for kids to play.
