We are entering a challenging but important period of planning for the future of the Boulder Valley School District, which includes consolidation, closure, or programmatic changes at the elementary level. We want to begin by sharing our commitment to you and to our community.

Happy Holidays

Thank you for your patience and understanding this week as our community experienced unusually high winds that impacted our schools. I know this disruption—especially so close to Winter Break—was not how anyone hoped to begin the holiday season.

While this is the first time BVSD has been forced to close schools due to a high wind event of this nature, we recognize that similar challenges may arise again. We are committed to continuous improvement and will use the lessons learned this week to strengthen our plans moving forward.

Yesterday, we watched in horror as another school shooting unfolded at a Colorado school – this time in our neighboring school district, Jeffco Public Schools, where two students were critically injured by a classmate. Today, those fears came to our district when a community member reported something they thought was suspicious near the Fairview High School/Southern Hills Middle School campus.

Both schools went into Lockdown, while nearby schools went into Secure. Thankfully, today, it was only a false alarm and BVSD students are safe. We, however, recognize the impact these situations have on our students, at these schools and across the district.

We couldn’t be more excited to welcome back all of our students and school staff back to school. This week our teachers returned from Summer Break and it will be our students’ turn next week.

Yesterday’s attack on a peaceful vigil in the heart of our community is not only a vile assault on our Jewish community—it is an attack on us all. Those bearing the physical wounds from this unprovoked violence are in pain today—we wish them successful and speedy recoveries. Our hearts are also with those bearing psychological wounds, who may find themselves fearful today—we hope you are surrounded by love to lighten the burden.
