Proposed Changes for the Casey Middle/Manhattan Middle Attendance Area Boundaries

As part of the BVSD Board of Education’s regular review of attendance area boundaries, it adopted an attendance boundary adjustment for the Casey and Manhattan middle school boundaries that affects families living in the Whittier Elementary and Creekside Elementary attendance areas at its Sept. 23, 2025 meeting

This change was proposed during the Board of Education’s review of attendance area boundaries this spring, with discussions taking place during work sessions on March 11May 20, and Sept. 9, 2025.

DETAILS

The boundary changes include moving the Casey Middle School attendance area boundary to include all of the Whittier Elementary attendance area and moving the Manhattan Middle School attendance area boundary to include all of the northern portion of the Creekside Elementary attendance area. These areas would continue to be assigned to Boulder High.

The change will be effective beginning in the 2026-27 school year.

These changes would allow for the following exception:

  • All middle school students in the affected areas enrolled at Casey Middle School or Manhattan Middle School in the 2025-26 school year will have the choice to remain at those schools through 8th grade. Bus transportation will only be provided for students who qualify and attend their assigned schools beginning in SY 2026-27.

BVSD staff will contact families in the Fall of 2025 to explain the options and support them with updating their enrollment.

WHY MAKE THESE CHANGES?

This proposal is guided by a couple of core principles, including:

  • Fostering community and neighborhood cohesion

BVSD believes there is value in supporting neighborhood-based relationships as students move through the school grades. Currently, Whittier Elementary feeds into Casey Middle and Manhattan Middle and Creekside Elementary feeds into Casey Middle, Manhattan Middle, and Southern Hills Middle. This change assigns all Whittier students to Casey and reduces the number of middle schools that Creekside is assigned to from three to two.

  • Maximization of pedestrian access to schools, and efficient use of transportation

Students who live within the Whittier boundary and are reassigned to Casey will be within walking distance of the middle school. BVSD’s Safe Routes to School team has resources to support students with walking to school safely.
