Substitutes

• All substitute teachers in the Boulder Valley School District must hold a current Colorado teaching license or a Colorado Substitute Authorization issued by the Colorado Department of Education. For more information on this, visit the CDE Substitute Licensing web page.
  • One-Year Authorization requires a high school diploma or it's equivalent and experience working with children
  • Three-Year Authorization requires a bachelor's degree or higher
  • Five-Year Authorization requires an active Colorado teacher license or an teacher license issued by another state
• Those who hold a Substitute Authorization and/or Teaching License can accept assignments for both licensed teachers and non-licensed positions (SPED Para, Pre-K Para, Pre-K Enrichment, and School Age Care (SAC)

• A Special Education (SPED) paraeducator substitute supports BVSD's intensive learning programs
• A substitute authorization is not required
• Special Education paraeducator substitutes can only substitute for Special Education paraeducators, as well as other non-licensed positions such as Pre-K Para, Pre-K Enrichment, and School Age Care (SAC)

1. Confirm Your License Status - If you’re applying to be a Substitute Teacher, you must hold a current Colorado teaching license or a Colorado Substitute Authorization issued by the Colorado Department of Education. For more information on this, visit the CDE Substitute Licensing web page.

2. Apply Online - Submit your application through our Careers page. Be sure to include any required documentation along with at least two professional references. If you meet the requirements of the position, you will be issued an official offer letter.

3. Complete Hiring Steps - Finalize all required hiring steps, including background checks, fingerprinting, and I-9 verification, if needed.

4. Attend BVSD Substitute Orientation - All substitute applicants must attend a BVSD Substitute Orientation session. After attending orientation, you will be hired by our HR team.

5. Begin Making a Difference - Once you’ve been hired, you’ll be ready to start supporting our students and schools as a valued member of the BVSD team!
