Substitute Teachers

WE ARE SAFELY WELCOMING STUDENTS BACK TO SCHOOL AND LOOKING FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Ever thought about becoming a substitute teacher?  If so, now is the time to step up for students! BVSD is experiencing a shortage of substitutes and teachers need support now more than ever.

Licensed Substitute

  • All substitute teachers in the Boulder Valley School District must hold a current Colorado teaching license or a Colorado Substitute Authorization issued by the Colorado Department of Education. For more information on this, visit the CDE Licensing web page.
  • One-Year Authorization requires a high school diploma or it's equivalent and experience working with children
  • Three-Year Authorization requires a bachelor's degree or higher
  • Five-Year Authorization requires an active Colorado teacher license or an teacher license issued by another state
  • Licensed substitutes may sub to teachers and special education paraeducators

Special Education Paraeducator Substitute

  • Special Education paraeducator substitutes support BVSD's intensive learning programs
  • A substitute authorization is not required
  • Special Education paraeducator substitutes can only substitute for Special Education paraeducators

Pay Rates

Substitute Assignments

  • Full Day: $125 (M-F)
  • Half Day: $68 (M-F)

ILC & ICAN Substitutes

(includes Transitions, Halcyon and special education paraeducators)

  • Full Day: $140 (M-F)
  • Half Day: $75 (M-F)

Retired BVSD Teachers

  • Full Day: $145 (M-F)
  • Half Day: $78 (M-F)

Long Term Substitute Assignments (licensed only)

  • First 10 days are paid at the rates described above
  • Beginning on day 11, the daily rate is $140 for full day; $75 for half day whether in-person or virtual

Application Process

Substitute hiring is currently closed for the 2024-2025 school year.  Please check back for updates as hiring for the coming school year will begin in July 2024.

  1. Apply for a Substitute Authorization through the Colorado Department of Education if you are applying as a licensed substitute (A current CO teaching license also qualifies)
  2. Apply to the Substitute Teacher 2024-2025 or the Special Education Paraeducator Substitute job vacancy by submitting a BVSD online application.
  3. Attend a BVSD Substitute Orientation (Virtual)

That is all it takes!  Substitute teaching is a wonderful way you can earn money, influence lives, and make a difference!
